West Coast Heritage Centre, Zeehan Encompassing 7 hectares, housing over 30 themed displays, + our world-class gem & mineral exhibit. You can even grab a souvenir in our gift shop.

This Collection belongs to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and forms part of the State Collection. From Mines and Memories to Trains and Treasures, the West Coast Heritage Centre offers a unique insight to the history of the West Coast of Tasmania and gives visitors a comprehensive experience and understanding of the heritage of the area, adding value and significance to your visit of this beautiful region of Tasmania. The Centre incorporates four historic buildings- the Zeehan School of Mines and Metallurgy, Zeehan Post Office, Police Station-Court house, and the Gaiety Theatre-Grand Hotel, as well as 30 themed exhibition spaces. Explore the mining relics in our yard, experience what an underground mine was like in our Crocoite Cavern and to see minerals and rocks of every size, shape and colour imaginable. You can climb aboard our historic trains, stroll through the region’s history in our photographic galleries, watch Edwardian films in the majestic Gaiety Theatre, act out a scene in our Court house or take a peek into the somewhat secretive society of Freemason’s in our Masonic Lodge display. Throwback Thursday!

This plaque was made for the licensee of Zeehan's Central Hotel, Montrew Richard Menzie, around 1934-35, with the silver paper being obtained from chocolate and toffee wrappers!

The Central Hotel was constructed in 1900 on the site of the former Exchange Hotel, which had been dismantled after standing for only nine years. Today, the Central Hotel remains a rare landmark from Zeehan's booming days.

While the exact number of hotels in Zeehan has been a topic of debate, Lindsay Whitham concluded the peak was c. 1900-1902 when 17 hotels were trading at once - 16 of which were on the main street alone!

Throwback Thursday!

This photograph shows Dr Abbott at his dwelling in Penghana, 1895.

Predating the establishment of Queenstown, Penghana was a short-lived settlement that developed near the new Mount Lyell Smelters. This photograph demonstrates the simplicity of the structures in Penghana, which was essentially a shanty town of canvas and timber.

After a bushfire wiped out the Penghana township on the morning of Saturday 12 December 1896, claiming the life of woodcutter Thomas Brent and leaving hundreds homeless, the settlers moved down the Queen River and began rebuilding at what would become Queenstown.

When the General Manager of the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Company, Robert Sticht's new home was completed in 1898, it was named Penghana in honour of the early settlement and the pioneers - such as Dr Abbott and Thomas Brent - who lived there.
