Young Historical Museum

Young Historical Museum The Young Historical Society Inc. runs this not-for-profit Museum which preserves and shares the history of Young and District on Wiradjuri Country.

We are certified through the Museums and Galleries NSW Standards Program. The Young Historical Society was created on 28 February 1958 and began collecting local memorabilia from that time, creating a small museum. It is currently trading as Young Historical Museum and has been in its current location since 1976. The Museum is run by Volunteers from the Young Historical Society who underwent the M

useums and Galleries Standards Program in 2005. That means we abide by the National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries 2.0 as well as all Australian and international laws relating to heritage. Significant items on display include Coborn Jackey's breastplate given to him by James White in the 1830s, the Roll Up banner used during the 1861 Lambing Flat riots, Elizabeth Witham's 1826 sampler, a bible which once belonged to bushranger Frank Gardiner, a carriage made in Young by John Rogan in 1880 and a collection of art from world-reknowned glass artist Helmut Hiebl. Alongside displays, we also have a Research Library which members of the public are welcome to use when researching local history.

Happy International Museums Day!
This year's theme is 'Museums Uniting a Divided World'. The theme highlights the potential of museums to act as bridges across cultural, social, and geopolitical divides, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion and peace within and between communities worldwide.
This was highlighted just over a week ago at the event 'Tales of the railway at Young' which we held as part of the National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival.
Thanks to Tim the Yowie Man for permission to use his photo of the crowd.
We also want to thank you, the community, for all the help and support you give us. And last but not least, thank you to the volunteers who made this event happen and keep the Museum running and open to visitors.

Thank you Tim!

This week we feature Doug Palmer, a lifelong railway enthusiast and employee of the NSW Railways at Young and Harden. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Museum on Saturday from 10am for a conversation between Julia (Doug's daughter) and Barry Snelson, railway collector and donor of the 1885 Young Railway Station sign. This event is a part of the National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival. https://younghistoricalmuseum.wordpress.com/2026/05/07/a-railway-man-for-life/

On Thursday 16 October 1919, the Loyal Burrangong District Lodge No. 26 unveiled its Honor Roll dedicated to 31 of its members who had served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I. While performing the ceremony of unveiling the Honor Roll, Brother Perkins ‘asked all to stand in silence for a while in reference to the fallen brave. Afterwards, three hearty cheers were given for the King and the AIF.’

The Museum is a proud custodian of several local Honour Rolls as well as memorabilia from local service men and women.
We are open today, ANZAC Day, alongside our usual days of Tuesday - Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
