Making the most of the amazing weather we’ve had over the last few weekends, the volunteers at YRHC have been incredibly busy around the museum site!

A huge amount of work has been achieved thanks to the dedication and hard work of our volunteer team, including:

🔨 Installing new concrete footings for the upcoming access ramp into Tram W6 987, which serves as our museum café.

♿ Installing a new access ramp and upgraded handrails for the out-of-shed area and BR 1146 carriage as part of Rye Park Wind Farm Community Enhancement grant.

🎨 Applying the first of two coats of roof sealant paint to W5 824 to help keep the winter weather out and preserve the tram.
🪵 Continuing timber roof repairs on CBI 1259 as restoration work progresses.

Every project completed on site is only possible because of the incredible effort, time, and skills contributed by our volunteers. From restoration work and maintenance through to groundskeeping and public events, the work happening behind the scenes is what keeps the museum moving forward.

Thank you to everyone who has lent a hand over the past few weeks. Your support truly makes a difference.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, we’re always looking for new volunteers to join the team!

Last week we picked up a Zagro Wagen-Rangiergerät - or in plain English, a wagon positioner - and it’s one of those wonderfully odd bits of railway engineering you almost never see outside manuals or grainy photos.

Built in Germany in 1999, this clever machine can move rail vehicles up to 300 tonnes, and it does it in a way that makes engineers grin. The unit is placed on a flat section of track using a forklift. Its ramps are lowered, the forklift drives on and is secured, and then the magic happens: the forklift’s driving power is transferred to the wagon positioner via a set of heavy-duty rollers - think industrial treadmill for forklifts. The positioner then grips the rails and gently shuffles wagons exactly where they’re needed.

We believe this unit is one of only two in Australia, making it a rare and fascinating slice of railway history - practical, ingenious, and very rarely seen or documented.

It’s not glamorous. It doesn’t toot or clang. But it’s the sort of quietly brilliant machine that tells a deeper story about how railways actually work behind the scenes.

Next time you’re at Yass Railway Heritage Centre, keep an eye out - because sometimes the most interesting arrivals are the ones you weren’t expecting.

🚂 Yass Junction is turning 150 🚂

In July 2026, Yass Junction Railway Station marks 150 years since it opened in 1876, a pretty remarkable milestone for a place that has quietly shaped so much of Yass’s history.

The Yass Railway Heritage Centre would love to celebrate this anniversary in a way that really reflects the community. Before we start planning anything, we want to hear from you.

👉 How should Yass Junction’s 150th be celebrated?

Would you enjoy a special open day, historic displays, talks and tours, community events, or something completely different? Do you have memories, photos, or family stories connected to the station?

Share your ideas and stories in the comments.
We’d love to shape this celebration together and make it something the whole community can be proud of.
