CLOSING THIS SUNDAY | Edge City

Across two connected chapters, Edge City explores the suburbs, streets and places we call home. Featuring key works by Elvis Richardson alongside collection works by local and regional artists, the exhibition examines how identity, aspiration and belonging are shaped through the built environments around us.

Big things are ahead for Wollongong Art Gallery.

From November 2026, the Gallery will temporarily close for essential roof and air conditioning upgrades, helping protect both the building and our Collection into the future. The works are expected to take around 12 months, with reopening anticipated in November 2027.

While our building gets a refresh, our team will be busy planning future exhibitions, programs and exciting projects, including preparations for the Wollongong Art Prize and our 50th anniversary in 2028.

Join us on Sunday for a talk from Burnt Dirt artists discussing their current exhibition, Objects in Practice.

Hear from local artists Danielle Creenaune and Alex Neville, regional artists Alice Nixon and Baylee Griffin, and Burnt Director Hannah Barclay.

Objects in Practice features works by 24 artists from across Australia, the exhibition showcases new and experimental ceramic and object- based artworks developed during 4-week immersive residencies at the Clay Wollongong studio.

🎥 Join artist Raquel Caballero this Sunday for a free screening of Agnès Varda's acclaimed documentary The Gleaners and I as part of Once Upon a Doll. Raquel's handmade Agnès Varda doll is featured in the exhibition, celebrating the filmmaker's enduring creative legacy.

🥔 In honour of the film, Raquel will be hosting a potato party, with potato-themed snacks inspired by Varda's fascination with the humble potato and the beauty of overlooked things.

🎂 Happy heavenly birthday to Paul Reubens, creator of the iconic Pee‑wee Herman. What better way to celebrate than with a screening of Pee‑wee's Big Adventure?

Join us for a special screening this Sunday, hosted by Once Upon a Doll artist, Raquel Caballero. This a playful cult classic following Pee‑wee Herman’s outrageous quest to find his stolen bike.

Bursting with surreal humour and childlike imagination, the film is a perfect complement to Once Upon a Doll, which features a doll inspired by Paul Reubens’ iconic character and his wonderfully chaotic world of unbridled fun.

Have you seen Edge City yet?

The exhibition unfolds across two chapters, beginning with a focused survey of recent and key works by Elvis Richardson.

Richardson examines the built language of settlement and suburbia—its fences, thresholds, materials and protective gestures—drawing attention to the seductive surfaces and underlying tensions embedded within everyday domestic settings.
