Sugar Cane Production on the Manning.
In 1856 the first sugar cane was grown on the Lower Manning from cuttings brought from Port Macquarie and Brisbane. Joseph Andrews was one of the first to extoll the benefits of growing sugar cane. Joseph had been born at Coleraine, County Londonderry in Northern Ireland on 10/1/1814. He moved to the Manning in 1846 where he purchased the property known as ‘Yankangat’ which he promptly renamed ‘Woodside’ after his mother. By 1867 Joseph and others were exhibiting their sugar at local Agricultural shows thus renewing interest in its production. Joseph Andrews submitted samples of his sugar to the Singleton Show in August 1870 and was awarded first prize and a silver plated cup. Wingham Museum is now in possession of this cup. The Woodside Mill was completely destroyed by fire in 1871 and in 1872 heavy frost severely damaged his cane fields and put an end to the burgeoning enterprise.
