Crane Gantry

The crane gantry was erected by the Melbourne Harbour Trust in 1942 as a conduit for moving equipment from the main manufacturing shed to vessels on Workshops Jetty or the new slipway north of the jetty.

The five-ton overhead electric travelling crane was installed by EA Austin Pty Ltd at a cost of 1,683 pounds in December 1942. It had push button controls and was weatherproof to allow its operation outside the main shed on the site.

In its 1942 report, the Melbourne Maritime Trust said: “Crane gantry tracks for the 5-ton overhead travelling cranes in the eastern side of the main building containing the machine shop and boilermakers’ shop at the Williamstown Workshops and Slipways, were extended northward a distance of 200 feet, being carried on heavy steel joists stiffened laterally with steel channels and supported on steel columns on piled foundations spaced at 40 feet centres longitudinally”.
