The Lion and The Lioness, the largest steam traction engines ever to come to Tasmania, have been welcomed home after 50 years living interstate. These engines made a huge contribution to the industrial heritage of Tasmania. A key project included dredging the Trevallyn Tailrace for the Hydro Electric Commission.

The late three Pearns Brothers would be thrilled to see their return, having missed out in purchasing them during the sales process.

Without funding support from the National Cultural Heritage Account this project would not have been possible. Please take the time to read Minister Tony Bourke's Media Release listed in the comments below.

May we take this opportunity to thank all those who made this acquisition possible. In particular Gradco Pty Ltd of Launceston. This family Company has a long association with steam themselves. The professionalism of their staff and the quality of the equipment made the process of shipping these icons possible.

For the technically minded: They were built, as a pair, in 1926 by John Fowler & Co. Ltd., Leeds. UK. They weigh nearly 25 tons and can generate up to 250 Indicated Horsepower. The rear wheels are 7 ft (2.13m) diameter.

Pearns Steam World is open every day except Christmas Day and ANZAC Day.

Notice is hereby given of the Annual General Meeting of the Westbury Preservation Association (t/a Pearns Steam World).
The meeting will be held on Monday 31st August 2026, in the office at the museum (65 Meander Valley Road, Westbury. TAS) and will commence at 13:00hrs.
The business will be to receive and approve the annual reports, and elect/appoint committee members and officers of the Association. No further business will be entered into.

Work is now well underway replacing the nuts, bolts, washers and skylights of Shed 1. Most of Shed 2 has been done, and it looks much better - as well as being rain-proof! Nathan Lee and his team are doing a great job. Thanks again to the State government for their financial contribution to this project.
