Rail Journeys Museum in Association with the Australian Railway Monument Welcome to the Official page of the Rail Journeys Museum in association with the Australian

The Australian Railway Monument, dedicated in 2005, was built as a tribute to rail employees and the Memorial Walls carry the names of over 2,500 rail workers who lost their lives on the Australian railways since the 1850’s. The landscaped monument area features six three metre stainless steel sculptures of railway workers created by Australian Artist Dominique Sutton as well as an amphitheatre fo

r public concerts. Also in the area is the Railway Pathway of Service honouring past and present railway workers, with a large plaque in honour of Mr Ben Chifley, past Prime Minister of Australia and train driver. Werris Creek is the first and last railway town in NSW and is located on a major railway junction. The Werris Creek railway station is the third largest in NSW. It houses the Werris Creek Rail Journeys Museum, which brings this town's railway past back to life. The stunning displays are a credit to the tireless volunteers who made this museum happen. Constant upgrades and new displays will make the visitor come back again and again. Any donations go towards upgrading and maintaining the museum. This track inspection train is a specialised three-car train set of former NSWGR stainless steel carriages. It records and inspects track geometry and conditions across Australia's standard gauge network.

The locomotive GM22 entered service in 1962, and the GM10 locomotive entered service in 1952 and is the oldest operating loco in regular service in Australia.

Thank you to Barry Trudgett for allowing us to use your amazing photos and the information provided - taken 1 February 2026

The Great Southern Tour Train to stop over at Werris Creek

For all those train lovers out there, Werris Creek will be in for what could possibly be a one off treat this weekend.

At approximately 8.30am on Saturday, 31 January 2026 The Great Southern will be paying us a visit. Bringing with them over 90 guests, the train will be diverting from its normal Adelaide to Brisbane tour, due to track maintenance works in Sydney.

The Great Southern, is Australia’s newest long-distance rail journey. It made its inaugural trip from Adelaide to Brisbane on 6 December 2019. It was established as a summer, multi-day journey traversing the southeast coast to complement the existing Ghan and Indian Pacific routes, with carriages often re-purposed from those services during their off season. This train is a seasonal, luxury rail tour operating from December to February.

From South Australia to Queensland this multi-day journey travels along 2885kms of tracks, passing through Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Pulling the 28 carriages are two, bright orange, NR Class Locomotive engines – that use around 40,000 litres of fuel and not forgetting the two power vans that carry three generators to provide the electricity. The Great Southern has an average weight of 1626 tonnes and a length of 711 metres, which makes this is a very impressive train to visit Werris Creek.

After disembarking, the train guests will board several coaches for a day trip around our area. The train will then stow at Spring Ridge for most of the day and then return later to Werris Creek to pick the rail guests up. At this stage it is not known what time in the afternoon The Great Southern will be back in Werris Creek, due to the extreme heat we are experiencing this weekend.

Congratulations to one of our Volunteers, Peter Sawtell, on this great achievement.

Peter Sawtell remembers making friends and enemies, keeping fit behind a diesel engine, and even meeting King Charles III during his "legendary" career.
