The Great Southern Tour Train to stop over at Werris Creek
For all those train lovers out there, Werris Creek will be in for what could possibly be a one off treat this weekend.
At approximately 8.30am on Saturday, 31 January 2026 The Great Southern will be paying us a visit. Bringing with them over 90 guests, the train will be diverting from its normal Adelaide to Brisbane tour, due to track maintenance works in Sydney.
The Great Southern, is Australia’s newest long-distance rail journey. It made its inaugural trip from Adelaide to Brisbane on 6 December 2019. It was established as a summer, multi-day journey traversing the southeast coast to complement the existing Ghan and Indian Pacific routes, with carriages often re-purposed from those services during their off season. This train is a seasonal, luxury rail tour operating from December to February.
From South Australia to Queensland this multi-day journey travels along 2885kms of tracks, passing through Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Pulling the 28 carriages are two, bright orange, NR Class Locomotive engines – that use around 40,000 litres of fuel and not forgetting the two power vans that carry three generators to provide the electricity. The Great Southern has an average weight of 1626 tonnes and a length of 711 metres, which makes this is a very impressive train to visit Werris Creek.
After disembarking, the train guests will board several coaches for a day trip around our area. The train will then stow at Spring Ridge for most of the day and then return later to Werris Creek to pick the rail guests up. At this stage it is not known what time in the afternoon The Great Southern will be back in Werris Creek, due to the extreme heat we are experiencing this weekend.
