Wenty Voices / Wentworthville Now and Then

Wenty Voices / Wentworthville Now and Then Through this page I aim to share information and stories that I write about my home town

If you're interested in sharing your Wenty memories, experiences or pictures please send them through. Depending on the response I get I may write a book based on some of this information at a later date. If your information is selected for inclusion in a book I'll contact you about completing a release form.

For those that knew the Comerford family - I've found this photo of Henry Comerford aged 10, outside 'Yoorooga' at the corner of Hudson & Bridge Roads.

I passed by the old Meyer Produce building on my way to Darcy Road PS today, and noticed that the building has been sold.

There been a couple of ‘incarnations’ there, since we used to buy laying mash and wheat to feed our chooks in the ‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s, the last one being the ‘Australian Top Team’ Muay Thai training centre.

I wonder what’s next?

Happy to report that three copies of my Wenty Voices book have been hand delivered to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Darcy Road Public School, and Parramatta Marist Brothers High School.

It’s great to know that those books are available in those libraries, and available for free as a digital edition, to those school communities. :0)

Hi all
I've been approached by Cumberland City Council asking if I'd like to do an author talk on my Wenty Voices book.

Sounded like a good idea to me, and because they had space free in June, I couldn't go past my Mum's birthday, Monday 22nd of of June, to have a chat at Merrylands Library (details on the attached photo).

Hope to see some of you there. :0)

Because it’s important to look in on your neighbours, I took the train to Merrylands, and walked up to Hilltop Road Public School, to present them with a copy of my ‘Wenty Voices’ book.

My, how Merrylands has developed over the past decade or so!

For those who, like me, learned the fundamentals of Ju-Jitsu in the little hall in Ringrose Park, under Trevor Simpson & Co.

It’s great to know that their legacy lives on. :0)

I’m on my way to Wenty Leagues, to give a copy of my book to the Board, at the club’s AGM.

While this will be a bit like ‘giving ice to eskimos,’ in that the club paid for that book, and several others, that are being donated to local schools and libraries, it’s important nonetheless, to officially hand it to the club.

All that aside, I’m equally thrilled to report that at 67, I can still ‘jump the columns’ at St Paul’s (now Wentworthville Anglican) Church.

A very real sense of accomplishment there. ;0)

Hi everyone, just in case you're interested, here's the speech I made outside the old Wentworthville Post Office at 63 Dunmore Street, on Friday the 1st of May, launching my Wenty Voices book.

I know that quite a few of you have said that you'd like to have a copy of the 'real book,' rather than the digital edition that I've been sharing over the past couple of weeks.

Please note that I'd hoped to avoid having to have a print run of books, because dealing with finances and postage can be a proper pain.

That said, if you're one of those people that would like a 'real book,' could you please comment on this post, saying that you'd like to have the real book, and how many copies you'd like.

Once I've got a rough idea of the number of books required, I can talk to the printer about cost of printing, and also go to Australia Post to work out postage costs.

When I have those figures, I'll post them here, to see how many people are still interested. :0)

A children’s tea party was photographed in the Pendle Hill area in about 1919. The photo was donated by Mrs. E. Byrnes to the Holroyd Oral History Project.
