Warrnambool Art Gallery

Warrnambool Art Gallery For the past 135 years, the Warrnambool Art Gallery has facilitated rich experiences for audiences.

The Warrnambool Art Gallery began in 1886 when retired police officer Joseph Archibald opened its doors in a building behind the mechanics institute in Liebig Street. The Gallery began with an eclectic mix of artworks and museum curios. Before long Archibald mobilised public support and paid for a new gallery annex. Loans and grants allowed the Gallery collection to grow with significant early acq

uisitions by French, German, and Belgian artists, which were less expensive than British works. These were followed by the Louis Buvelot’s pastoral landscape Sunset Waterpool at Coleraine (1874). Buvelot found his artistic theme in light and tone and it is not surprising that he favoured the Western District during his sketching tours of Victoria. This reverence for light and tone can be seen in local contemporary painters including Kathryn Ryan who captures moody rows of trees in hazy paddocks. The Gallery also holds a series of early tonalist paintings by Australian artists including Clarice Beckett, Archie Colquhoun, Percy Leason, Max Meldrum and Roland Wakelin. Despite its enthusiastic start the economic downturn of the 1890s brought the Collection to a halt. In 1910 the Council took control of the Mechanics Institute and ran the Gallery there until 1963 when the building was allocated for municipal offices. The Collection was dispersed on loan to galleries in Shepparton and Hamilton and reunited in 1971. In 1986 the Gallery’s Centenary year, a permanent home was built next to the ‘Civic Green’ and named in memory of one its champions Sir Fletcher Jones O.B.E.

The Transient Nature of Things
From the Warrnambool Art Gallery Collection
28 Mar 2026 - 2 Aug 2026

Borrowed from the title of Elizabeth Gower’s work of the same name, The Transient Nature of Things touches on the complex lives of women who walk the tightrope between motherhood, art-making and selfhood.

Working with bold colours and in large scale, each artist presents personal experiences that resonate with the feminist politics of the 1970s and 80s. From the elevation of what had previously been considered traditional female craft practices, to the recognition and depiction of personal domestic life as an inescapable political act; this exhibition acknowledges the ways that motherhood is woven, both seen and unseen, through the lives of these artists.

Featuring artists, Marie Cook, Elizabeth Gower and Ann Newmarch.

Part Interior, Part Object, Part Feeling
Claire Lambe
28 Mar 2026 - 28 Jun 2026

Claire Lambe’s process-oriented practice is a sophisticated synthesis of cultural material and autobiographical narrative. Her work, spanning sculpture, sound, film, and installation, operates at the intersection of her personal history and a rigorous engagement with the canons of art history, contemporary art, cinema and music. In her presentation, these influences merge into a singular, cohesive aesthetic language, immersing the viewer in image, sound and object, as a proposition to question whether art can offer a meaningful reflection upon existence.

For her solo exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, Lambe presents a newly commissioned work that weaves together architectural, art historical and personal references, constructing a space designed for subconscious association. This approach challenges the traditional dichotomy between the domestic and the professional. By navigating the transition of the private into the public sphere, Lambe demonstrates that “art-making isn’t separate from living; at best, it’s where your environment is exposed, and where the daily dynamics of intimate relationships stop being private.”

Kait James: Red Flags

Orange Regional Gallery, NSW
11 April – 14 June, 2026

Kait James: Red Flags is Wadawurrung artist Kait James’ most ambitious solo exhibition to date. Since 2018, James has been carving out a unique visual language based in the reappropriation of racialised products. Colloquially identified as ‘Aboriginalia’, these mass-produced, commercial objects range from souvenir tea towels and pennant flags to children’s dolls and ceramic figurines. Primarily created from the 1950s through to the 1980s for consumption by non-Indigenous tourists, they depict culturally insensitive and racially stereotyped imagery, designs and motifs.

Kait James: Red Flags is a Warrnambool Art Gallery exhibition, curated by Aaron Bradbrook and touring nationally with NETS Victoria.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body, and the Visions of Australia program, and has received development assistance from NETS Victoria’s Exhibition Development Fund, supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of sharing our recently opened collection shows with students from Port Fairy.

We explored prints of Cape Bridgewater, a beautiful tapestry by Marie Cook and how people in our community helped to restore habitat for our native animals with the help of a painting created in 1855, a place they had just driven past on the bus, Tower Hill 🌳 🐨 🦘

Our Gallery Explorers program responds to works from the recently opened collection shows and includes a hands on creative session in the studio and is suitable for all ages.

Students got their hands dirty, using print to create texture and colour on koala, cockatoo, emu, kangaroo, echidna and wombat masks, all animals that once called Tower Hill home.

Public school subsidised travel and free entry for all students is provided with funding from the Department of Education and Training.
