Tomorrow, the Warren Museum and Art Gallery will officially open Of Essence and Earth, bringing together the work of potters Geoff Thomas and Peter Wilson and painter Dennis Wilson.
Through clay, fire, texture, colour and form, this distinctive exhibition celebrates the connection between the artist’s hand and the natural world. Each work carries its own story, yet together they create a powerful conversation about place, process and the enduring beauty of the earth.

Of Essence and Earth brings together the creative talents of painter Geoff Thomas and potters Dennis Wilson and Peter Wilson in an exhibition shaped by place, process and the enduring beauty of the earth.

Through paint, clay, texture and form, each artist offers a deeply personal interpretation of the landscapes, materials and natural elements that inspire them. While their creative approaches are distinctly their own, their works come together in a powerful conversation between artist, material and place.

Meet the Artist: Dennis Wilson

For Dennis Wilson, colour is not simply one element of a painting. It is a language capable of expressing the energy, emotion and complexity of the visible world.

Based between Sydney and the Blue Mountains, Dennis has been painting and sculpting for more than four decades. His artistic development has included study at the National Art School, the Julian Ashton Art School and the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio, where he studied under renowned Australian sculptor Tom Bass.

Alongside his creative practice, Dennis has pursued a distinguished legal career specialising in environmental, planning, development and Local Government law. This unusual intersection of art, landscape and environmental understanding brings another dimension to the way he observes and interprets the world.

Dennis’s recent paintings are gestural and abstract expressionist in style. Created with freedom, movement and instinct, they carry the influence of action painting while remaining distinctly his own.

Many are nonrepresentational, yet through colour they evoke landscapes, atmosphere, memory and emotion.

Each canvas invites the viewer to pause, look beyond the surface and discover their own meaning within the movement, energy and layers of colour.

Having previously operated his own gallery, Art Space, on his cattle property at Crookwell, Dennis now works from studios in Sydney and Blackheath. His inclusion in Of Essence and Earth brings the expressive power of painting into conversation with the elemental beauty of handcrafted ceramics.
