LAST CHANCE to see Ruins in Reverse by Carly Fischer, which closes on Sunday 14 June.

The exhibition is inspired by the former Beechworth Asylum and the artist's great-grandmother’s 50-year life spent institutionalised for 'talking to the furniture'. The work explores the idea of shifting between realities, uncovering forgotten fragments that blur past and present.

AFFORDING TRUTH features 14 artists from across the country whose work interrogates the muddy space of truth using affordances - the qualities of objects or environments that suggest or enable actions and interactions.

DANIEL MCKEWEN draws upon the affordances offered by video platforms, auto-play and infinite scrolling, to highlight the insidiousness of online scam advertising and its increasing utilisation of AI. SCOTTY SO also uses the illusion of truth afforded by AI to create a fictionalised account of Prime Minister Harold Holt’s disappearance. Inspired by the first viral AI image, ALEX SETON plays with perception in And so it goes... with a puffer jacket that can no longer afford warmth.

Affording Truth is now on until 21 June 2026.

Affording Truth is a collaborative curatorial project between Wangaratta Art Gallery, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and City of Moreton Bay Galleries curated by Rachel Arndt, Dr Lee-Anne Hall and Hannah Williamson. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

COMING SOON 👀 Ali Noble’s practice centres on textiles - particularly curtains and drapery - as sculptural and architectural forms that gently disrupt the hard, rational lines and 'languages' of modernist space. Through hand‑sewn, padded, and vividly-coloured textile works, she uses softness, movement, and sensuality to explore themes of domestic labour, motherhood, intimacy, and enchantment, setting textiles as both material and metaphor. Her recurring use of curtains evokes ideas of transition and theatricality, proposing an exploration of the imaginative and sentimental.

In her exhibition, Nothing is certain, said The Curtain, curtains operate as lively, shifting elements - embodying fluidity and visibility - and inviting audiences to consider how space is organised, who it is for, how does it feel and how is it used.

The exhibition will open on 20 June in Gallery 2.

LAST CHANCE to see AETHER by Marie Salinger before it closes on 3 June.

Wangaratta-based artist Marie Salinger's series of vibrant new paintings use foraged natural materials alongside impressions of the land’s contours from the artist's time on residency in Italy. The exhibition title, AETHER, reflects on the ancient idea of a subtle, luminous medium that binds earth and sky.

COMING SOON 👀 Petite Miniature Textiles 2026 opens on 27 June.

This biennial exhibition showcases innovative small-scale textile practice from across Australia and forms an important part of Wangaratta Art Gallery’s program, reflecting its longstanding emphasis on contemporary textile art. The exhibition also echoes the history of textiles in Wangaratta and the continuing textile story of the region.

This year, 46 works by 34 artists and groups were selected from a highly competitive field of over 280 entries by Guest Curator Cara Johnson, an artist and previous Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award finalist.

Responding to the theme of 'in the detail' this year's selections reflect curator Cara Johnson's ongoing interest in slow making, material intelligence and the quiet, powerful moments that emerge when time is spent with a work. The selected artists respond to this idea in diverse and often surprising ways, demonstrating how scale can intensify meaning, technique and conceptual depth.

ROBERT ANDREW obscures Yawuru words through programmed mechanics and organic materials, speaking to the dispossession of First Nations people from their language.

RYAN PRESLEY references the legacy of colonisation through his paintings by replacing Christian icons with First Nations figures to call account to the underlying forms of control that are imposed on First Nations peoples.

Both artist's works are featured in Affording Truth, on now until 21 June 2026.

Affording Truth is a collaborative curatorial project between Wangaratta Art Gallery, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and City of Moreton Bay Galleries curated by Rachel Arndt, Dr Lee-Anne Hall and Hannah Williamson. CARLY FISCHER is a Melbourne-based sculptural artist whose installations draw on the overlooked details and hidden histories of specific places. In her process she first gathers information by wandering, field recording, and conducting archival research, then creating sculptural works that blur boundaries between form, material and context. Her assemblages merge found object fragments with subtle reconstructions to complex dialogues of various environments. After completing an MFA in 2015 at Monash University, she has exhibited across Australia, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Scotland, England, Japan and the US through solo, group and collaborative projects and residencies.

Her exhibition Ruins in Reverse is now on until 14 June.

After a transformative residency in Collemacchia, Italy, MARIE SALINGER deepened her practice through immersion in the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the idea ‘Solvitur Ambulando’ (it is solved by walking) and the personal concept of 'walking towards myself' she engaged in daily contemplative walks that informed a series of experimental works created through drawing, printing, photography, and painting. Working directly with the environment — sometimes even on the ground or using foraged materials like burnt olive trees — the artist explored the landscape as a central motif, embracing a new-found freedom from expectations and constraints. This process expanded her artistic voice and had a profound impact on their practice. Now back in her Beechworth studio, the time spent in Italy continues to enrich her work.

Salinger’s exhibition AETHER will be on show until 3 June 2026 in the WPACC Foyer Gallery.

TRUTH BE TOLD Tapping into human psychology through recent technological advancements and historical references Affording Truth features 14 Australian artists who examine truth and the affordances of society.

“Affordances are everywhere in our world—they are critical for our survival,” says Wangaratta Art Gallery Director, Rachel Arndt. A door handle signifies a chance to open the door. Or how a cave was an early affordance for shelter. “We’d learn to recognise these from birth and experience… But so much of the digital realm has taken these things out of our control and our understanding, and they’re being used to manipulate us.” From social media’s algorithm, the endless YouTube stream, clickbait, and intelligent scams, fractures in truth appear everywhere, writes Emma-Kate Wilson for ArtGuide.
