Our month with Jill Kromkamp as Gallery 5's Artist of the Month has come to an end, and what a wonderful few weeks it's been! 🎨

From the elongated grace of her Modigliani-inspired portrait, to a joyful jumble of shoes, a tender nest of hatching eggs, a study in light and shadow with three green apples, a sun-dappled Queensland creek bed, a warm and characterful portrait, and a moody tangle of forest branches β€” Jill has shown us just how far her curiosity and instinct can take her as an artist.

Jill has described painting as her little outlet, her meditation, her escapism β€” and that spirit has come through in every single piece she's shared with us this month.

Swipe through the gallery below to take one more look at Jill's collection in full. πŸ‘

Please join us in thanking Jill for sharing her work and her story with our community this month, and let her know in the comments how much you've enjoyed following along. ❀️

We're nearing the end of our celebration of Jill Kromkamp, our Artist of the Month, with a moody, atmospheric watercolour and ink study. 🎨

Dark, criss-crossing branches cut across pools of golden and olive wash, with soft white gaps letting the paper breathe through the canopy β€” a composition that captures the tangled, layered feeling of standing beneath trees and looking up. The loose, confident linework shows Jill's ease with ink and wash, letting the medium do much of the work.

Jill has spoken about painting as her little outlet, her meditation β€” something intuitive. This quiet, exploratory piece feels like a lovely example of that mindset in practice.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and join us in giving Jill a well-deserved round of applause. πŸ†β€οΈ

One of the most striking works yet from our Artist of the Month, Jill Kromkamp β€” a warm, characterful portrait. 🎨

Painted in glowing golds, corals and deep reds, this portrait captures its subject with long dark hair, a gentle smile and a beaded pendant necklace, set against a softly abstracted background. Jill has built the face with real confidence, using colour rather than sharp line to shape the features and bring the expression to life.

Let us know your thoughts on this one in the comments, and be sure to visit the gallery this month to see our current exhibition. πŸ†β€οΈ

There's a real sense of place in this vibrant landscape by our Artist of the Month, Jill Kromkamp. 🎨

A dry creek bed winds through the canvas, scattered with pale river stones and framed by rich, textured foliage in deep greens, warm oranges and touches of red. The loose, expressive brushwork gives the whole scene a shimmering, sun-dappled quality, as though the light itself is moving across the rocks.

Jill developed much of her painting practice while living in Central Victoria, where she joined a local art group and took part in countless workshops alongside a close community of fellow artists β€” it was there that her connection to the Australian landscape really deepened, and it's clearly stayed with her ever since.

This is one of the pieces we're featuring as part of Jill's month as Gallery 5's featured artist. We'd love to hear what this landscape brings to mind for you β€” share your thoughts in the comments, and visit the gallery to see what's currently on the walls. πŸ‘

Simplicity done beautifully β€” this striking still life from our Artist of the Month, Jill Kromkamp, proves that sometimes less really is more. 🎨

Three green apples sit in a shaft of light against a moody, near-black background, with a single pale plinth anchoring the composition. The dramatic contrast and confident use of negative space give the piece a real sense of quiet theatre, letting the apples' colour and gentle sheen do all the talking.

Since moving to Queensland, Jill has spoken about how much the local light and colour palette have shaped her work β€” a shift she describes as "a different kettle of fish altogether" compared to her painting life in Victoria. This piece shows that sensitivity to light in action.

We're loving sharing Jill's work with you this month. Share your thoughts on this one in the comments, and stop by the gallery to see our current exhibition. ✨

A gentle, tender moment in nature, captured in ink and watercolour by our Artist of the Month, Jill Kromkamp. 🎨

This delicate pairing shows a nest cradling three speckled eggs on one side, and on the other, those same eggs just beginning to hatch β€” tiny beaks emerging into the world. The loose, scratchy linework of the twigs and nest contrasts beautifully with the soft washes of colour used for the eggs themselves.

Jill's practice grew largely through hands-on experience and community workshops rather than formal training, and pieces like this show just how much sensitivity she brings to close observation. There's real patience and warmth in the way she's handled such a small, fleeting subject.

This is one of several works we're featuring as part of Jill's turn as Artist of the Month. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and pop into the gallery this month to see what's currently on display. ❀️
