Beautiful Hyde Park, at 4pm, rush hour in the City ….
Once the meeting place with friends, the other Town Hall or Opera House steps
( in the 1980s )
Many thanks to Phillip Hill Thalis A + UP and Peter John Cantrill for three years of Urban Studies - Cities all over the world - UTS School of Architecture , where I completed my Batchelor of Architecture ( Masters ) - First class honours, as by this stage I was working on the Renzo Piano Macquarie Apartments project and living with a friend from Uni .
For my final design , I had left it so late as had focussed on a group work project for Urban Studies, a thesis and conceptual artwork of Centennial Parkland v Millenial Parklands .. and the way these projects included housing and the growth of the city.
Not just the intricate design of the parkland, how the idea arose, the parties involved to design these incredible spaces , the way the land was parcelled and sold, the covenants on the land in Centennial Park, essentially the first zoning controls of an idealised growing city, turning to America for influence , following the Industrial Revolution.
The beginning of the idealised
“ Garden City “ in Sydney…
The impacts of both local and global socio political influences and a critical and philosophical understanding of morphology and place making.
The tree crowning is so beautiful, the park itself, on the Eastern edge of the City so incredibly beautiful to me - so much green space.
This is why I find the Town Hall gathering space and the demolition of the Woolworths Building so sad .
The lower ground connection from Town Hall through to Woolworths has always been an incredibly practical location for a supermarket and the building above could be used as a creative hub for Artists - it’s so close to the University and China Town.
It may be too late, however I feel passionately about these issues .
My Great Great Great Grandfather, Sir Henry Parkes , the father of Federation believed in both free speech, emancipation and recognition of our Indigenous people ( thankfully now recognised as one of the worlds oldest living cultures )
And the dedication of a park , like Hyde Park
