Excell Blacksmith & Engineering Museum

Excell Blacksmith & Engineering Museum The Excell Museum is a working museum, with blacksmithing techniques and equipment from last century

Open on the fourth Sunday of each month from 2-4pm all year. Also open on the second Sunday during the months of September to April. Contact our volunteers who are happy to show you around at any time on request. A coke fired forge is usually lit on open days with souvenirs being made from it. You will also see a range of rare machinery which are driven by belt and pulley systems. In the 1930s, th

e Excell Blacksmiths became well known for designing and building the "Brattenising Plough". This impressive device was patented in 1939 and revolutionised the process of road building in South Australia.

Paving Plus…
Having completed the paving in front of the museum it was clear that the adjacent driveway needed work.
Our working bee this week involved re-topping the driveway with gravel to provide a more consistent surface.
This should not only make the museum look better from the road, but also reduce the dust on the historical machinery within. Thanks to the committee members who volunteered their time to make this happen.

The Next Paver Project - Stage 1&2
The boys got busy at the working bee this week. Thanks to Charlie Challinger for his excellent earthworks last week to prepare the site. CNC Earthworks
A great team effort by the committee members can be seen from these photos in the first stages of laying these heavy duty pavers. Let’s hope the old knees and muscles can hold up long enough to enable these volunteers to finish the job soon!! 😬😁👍

This coming Sunday (11th Jan 2026) we are looking forward to a special extended opening of the Excell Museum. If you’re in the district and haven’t visited us recently, come along with your gold coin admission, and see the working blacksmith shop. Take a step back in time as you experience a range of historic engines and machines operating during the 4-hour period (2 – 6pm) with the assistance of your knowledgeable volunteer guides.

If you missed the Tumby Bay Pageant today, here’s a highlight for the Excell Museum committee.
It was a team effort to build the float and prepare the historic Commer Knocker engine. Special thanks to Graham and Leigh for parading them.

Thank you, Steve Trezise Electrical!
A new set of High Bay lights have recently been installed for us by Steve Trezise Electrical. We recently purchased the lights and soon realised we needed them professionally installed to work with the existing batten lights. Steve generously gifted his services and materials. Thanks also to Brodie and Archer for their professional work.
The engine shed is now fully illuminated. Bring your sunnies!!

The “Blackstone Oil Engine” has now been fully restored and located next to its Clutterbuck look-alike. The Blackstone was kindly donated by Sarge Bawden a year ago, and as you may see in this post from March 2024, needed a bit of work. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BfNGzYQyd/?mibextid=WC7FNe This video shows it being started for the first time. The result of a great team effort by our team of committee members who spent many hours to bring this project to life. We are also grateful for the time and skills of our community sign-writer, Spud Murphy for the beautiful pin-striping. Come and see this engine and many others being fired up this afternoon between 2 & 4pm. If you can’t make it today we are open by appointment and on every fourth Sunday each month until August (then 2nd & 4th from Sept. to April).

Today the Excell Museum held its special extended opening and we enjoyed the company of around 80 visitors. We were pleased to have our guest blacksmith, Fred Schmal using the forge and demonstrating the skills from his bygone trade.
Fred also did a great job of providing a young local blacksmithing enthusiast, Nehemiah Mickan with some hands-on instruction.
We celebrated the completion of our paved walkways with an official opening with thanks to the Bendigo Bank and their representatives Stephen Hibbit and Jade Dunn
