These beautiful cards are from our display currently in Gallery 2.
During WW1, the fabric & lace artisans of France & Belgium turned their hands to the souvenir trade to bring in an income. Needlework cards, cushion covers & handkerchiefs were commonly produced items which wew easily posted home to Australia.
These examples are likely silk, framed in embossed card. One to a soldier's mother, the other a cheery greeting 'from the Trenches'. Note the silver cockatoo added to the top for added appeal to Australians.

A little mystery in our history...
This beautiful military issue typewriter was used at Gallipoli & eventually returned to Australia with it's owner. It then spent the following decades in a domestic shed.
After it's donation to the museum our conservators started trying to work out why the keys were jammed, & the problem was this beautiful 'bug'. Now referred to as 'The Ant'.
No one, including the donator family, knows anything about the Ant. It's made out of wire (paper clips?) & beads.
Does it date back to ANZAC Cove & stored during the evacuation? Is it older? Did children playing in the shed in later years stash a treasure then forget about it?
We don't know. Do you?
The typewriter and Ant are on display in Gallery 2 of the museum.

Townsville awoke this morning to discover the Great Northern Hotel ablaze. The historic watering hole was built in 1900 opposite the railway station on Flinders Street & played its part in refreshing troops & civilians alike during WW1 & 2.

The beautiful St Matthews in Hermit Park Townsville is one the smaller War Memorial Churches in North Queensland. It does however, have a strong connection to the 31st Kennedy Regiment through it's 1956 Diocesan Chancellor.

Brigadier Francis Roger North (Q383; QX50080) was born in Ipswich 13/4/1894 & served in both WW1 & WW2. He was made Commander of the 31st 'Kennedy' on 1/12/1924.

This 1860s British military issue water flask was the high tech personal water transportation of it's day. Built like a miniture wh**ky cask by Coopers, it is held together with metal hoops & a [lead] pewter top. This flask has had a leather handle added.
It was filled by unscrewing the pewter stopper & sipped from by removal of an internal wooden peg.

Today the museum hosted Scouts from across Queensland as part of their school holidays camp at Bluewater.
Although we don't hold any identified images of activities at the scout camp site at Bluewater,we have located this photo at the AWM which was taken in the general area in 1942. Probably around Rollingstone.
Lt. William James Cameron (21 years old) with his kit & sleeping bag.
Lt. Cameron (QX25215, Q11352 & Q71086) was a Gun Position Officer in the 57th Battery, 17th Field Regiment.
