The beautiful St Matthews in Hermit Park Townsville is one the smaller War Memorial Churches in North Queensland. It does however, have a strong connection to the 31st Kennedy Regiment through it's 1956 Diocesan Chancellor.

Brigadier Francis Roger North (Q383; QX50080) was born in Ipswich 13/4/1894 & served in both WW1 & WW2. He was made Commander of the 31st 'Kennedy' on 1/12/1924.

Hot off the press!! A new publication for the Museum research library.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Gary Ewert has donated a copy of his latest publication. Ewart has researched the names and bibliographic details of Townsville's WW 2 casualties.
*** The book is for use in the museum only.

This 1860s British military issue water flask was the high tech personal water transportation of it's day. Built like a miniture whisky cask by Coopers, it is held together with metal hoops & a [lead] pewter top. This flask has had a leather handle added.
It was filled by unscrewing the pewter stopper & sipped from by removal of an internal wooden peg.

Today the museum hosted Scouts from across Queensland as part of their school holidays camp at Bluewater.
Although we don't hold any identified images of activities at the scout camp site at Bluewater,we have located this photo at the AWM which was taken in the general area in 1942. Probably around Rollingstone.
Lt. William James Cameron (21 years old) with his kit & sleeping bag.
Lt. Cameron (QX25215, Q11352 & Q71086) was a Gun Position Officer in the 57th Battery, 17th Field Regiment.

Did you know that over 1 million Indian Servicesmen served as part of the British Forces in WW1? They served in Africa, Gallipoli, Belgium & France.

Private George HAMMOND (2446) (1892-1917) was a member of the 47th Infantry Battalion.
Pte Hammond was born in Port Douglas (FNQ) & attended school in Innisfail. The family later relocated to Townsville.
He enlisted in Townsville April 1916 & served at the Somme valley, Bullecourt & Messine.
Private Hammond was killed in action 7/6/1917. His body is officially recorded as buried '"750 yards east of Messines" he has no known grave.
Hammond Street in the Townsville suburb of Mysterton was named in his honour in 1926.

One of our Vietnam items on display in Gallery 3 of the museum. This plaque was purchased by the donor from a Vietnam local in 1967 while serving with 2 RAR.
It is likely made with brass from an artillery shell.

The 2026 ANZAC Day commemorations saw at least 1 Community Service group supplying attendees with free sausages after Dawn Service.
It brought to mind one of our posts from 2018:

On 25/4/1917 the Australian Units of the 4th Battalion in France paused their practice for the Bullencourt assult (April/May 2017) to remember their fallen comrades at Gallipoli with a 1 day holiday, food & sport.
The men were specially issued: 1 bottle of beer, 1 packet of biscuits, 1 packet of chocloate, 2 sausages, 2 packets of ci******es, 1 box matches.
