This is the only art piece in the museum that you won’t get told off for touching! 👀✨

Melbourne-based artist Anisa Sharif specialises in glass mosaic, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian, Moroccan and Persian crafts, as well as Art Nouveau design.

Her work often features in community-focused art projects, working with marginalised and underprivileged groups to make art more accessible and interactive.

The peacock, a recurring motif in her practice, reflects beauty, diversity, and the humour found in creation 🦚

Unlike most works in the gallery, visitors are actively encouraged to touch this piece, creating a tactile experience of both surface and story.

✈️ Did you know one of the earliest recorded attempts at human flight happened over 1,000 years ago?

Abbas ibn Firnas was a Muslim inventor, engineer, poet, and scholar from Al-Andalus who became fascinated by how birds fly. In the 9th century, he designed a set of wings and attempted to glide through the air centuries before the invention of the airplane.

His experiment wasn't perfect, but it reflected something remarkable: a willingness to observe, experiment, and push the boundaries of what was thought possible.

🐪 Meet the Muslim migrants who helped shape this nation.

Long before roads, railways, and modern transport connected the Australian interior, thousands of cameleers from Afghanistan and other parts of South and Central Asia travelled the outback with their camels.

They transported supplies across vast distances, supported exploration and infrastructure projects, established some of Australia's earliest Muslim communities, and left a lasting mark on the nation's history.

Their story is a reminder that Muslims have been part of Australia's story for generations.

Did this mathematician from over 1,000 years ago contribute to making this post appear on your feed today?

From the word algorithm to the foundations of algebra, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi’s ideas didn’t just stay in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom - they travelled, evolved, and still shape the way we scroll, search, and navigate the digital world.

What started as solving equations became the backbone of modern technology.

Were humanoid robots really around 800 years ago?

In the 12th century, Ismail al-Jazari was designing water-powered machines that moved, played music, and performed tasks automatically, centuries before modern robotics existed. From programmable movement to hydraulic engineering, his inventions weren’t just imaginative, they solved real-world problems and helped shape the foundations of automation.

Centuries before “smart machines,” there was al-Jazari.

🏥 Would you let a medical student from 1,500 years ago practice on you?

During the Islamic Golden Age, hospitals known as Bimaristans helped shape important developments in medicine, education, hygiene, and patient care. 📚

In cities like Baghdad and Damascus, these institutions included trained doctors, pharmacies, teaching spaces, and separate wards for different medical conditions — ideas that still influence hospitals today. 🩺

Scholars such as Ibn Sina and Al-Razi helped shape medical knowledge that spread across cultures and endured for generations. 🌍
