Join us for a day of music, heritage, and hands-on fun as the Wollondilly Museum comes alive with the sights, sounds, and smells of yesteryear.

Our volunteers will be working hard on Saturday 29th August getting the Museum ready for the upcoming event!
🌟Traditional Trades and Craft Fair on 13th September.
Our volunteers meet one a month on a Saturday to do maintenance, clean, restock and generally catch up on museum jobs to keep the doors open to the public. We are open each weekend from 10am to 3 pm. Come and visit us add our event to your calendar as well! Come and meet the volunteers if you have ever thought of joining us, we’d love to meet you.

Not sure if The Oaks falls within STAN’s Sydney boundaries, but you can see the CBD skyline from the ridge on the edge of town. This well-preserved former convent, now priest’s residence, was built in 1905-6 in the grounds of St Aloysius Catholic Church. The nearby Wollondilly Heritage Centre & Museum in Edward St (open weekends and public holidays) offers many impressive displays of the rich local history, including a great old film of the Burragorang Valley during the construction of Warragamba Dam. Worth a visit.

We are privileged to be the carers of Murrooin’s Breast Plate and were honoured to host a morning tea to acknowledge the return to country of this most significant object. Thank you to all who came to celebrate the collaboration of many people and organisation to bring this project together.

MURROOIN’S BREAST PLATE RETURNS TO COUNTRY

Yesterday I had the privilege of joining Gundungurra Elders, community members, Susan Templeman MP and others for a very significant ceremony marking the return of Murrooin’s Breast Plate to Country.

Dating from the 1820s–1840s, the breastplate bears the name of Murrooin, a Gundungurra man known as a Cooradgie, or “clever man”, and carries a direct connection to our own local history here in Wollondilly.

Inscribed on it are the words “Belonging to Vanderville”, referring to the historic Vanderville property at The Oaks.

Those words are confronting to read today, and they speak to a difficult part of our history and the experiences of Aboriginal people during the early colonial period. That makes its return to Gundungurra Country all the more meaningful.

Yesterday was about much more than bringing a historical object home. It was about Country, culture, identity and recognising the deep and continuing history of the Gundungurra people in our shire.

The breastplate will now be cared for and displayed at the Wollondilly Heritage Centre & Museum as part of its permanent Gundungurra Indigenous Exhibition, ensuring this important piece of history remains accessible here on Country and within the shire.

I want to acknowledge the Gundungurra Elders, families and community who shared this important occasion with us. I'd also like to thank those that made the return of the breast plate possible, particularly Aunty Sharyn Halls, Aunty Kazan Brown, Susan Templeman MP, the Federal Office of the Arts as well as the absolutely amazing team of volunteers we have at Wollondilly Heritage Centre and Museum.

The acquisition was funded through a cultural heritage preservation grant from the federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts.

We'll be at Wollondilly Heritage Centre & Museum Traditional Crafts and Trades Fair next month on Sunday 13 September 10am - 3pm — a lovely traditional market well worth a wander.

Come see some of Ally's leadlight pieces on the stall, and get a look at the process behind them — from copper foil to the finished suncatcher. If it sparks something, workshops with Ally can be booked any time on our website.

We'll also have honey, beeswax candles, jams and pickles on hand.

🏛️⚜️ A Visit from 1st The Oaks/Oakdale Scouts! ⚜️🏛️

We were delighted to welcome the 1st The Oaks/Oakdale Scouts to the The Oaks Wollondilly Heritage Museum for a special tour exploring the history of our local community.

Our wonderful volunteers Trish and Kevin enjoyed showing the Scouts around our interactive museum and sharing stories, artefacts and fascinating pieces of local history.

It was fantastic to see the Scouts so engaged, asking questions and discovering more about the place they call home. ❤️

We love connecting with our local community and helping the next generation discover and appreciate our amazing local history!

A big thank you to the Scouts for visiting us — we hope to see you again soon! 👏
