Legio VI Victrix - Sydney

Legio VI Victrix - Sydney A Roman legion re-enactment group based in Sydney, Australia. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live.

We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land. Legio VI Victrix is a Roman legion based in Sydney which focuses on legionary life during the first century. They research the ancient lifestyle and civilisation that shaped much of Europe.

Members of Legio VI Victrix create clothing, build kits, conduct drills, and recreate period food recipes.

Eboracum (York) Britannia. In its prime it was the largest town in northern Britannia and a provincial capital. The site remained occupied after the decline of the Western Roman Empire and ultimately developed into the present-day city of York, in North Yorkshire, England, illustration by Jean-Claude Golvin.

Fossilized skulls of Pleistocene dwarf elephants found in coastal caves of Italy and the Greek islands may have inspired the myth of the Cyclops.

During the Pleistocene epoch (2.6 million–11,700 years ago), falling sea levels formed land bridges that allowed elephants to migrate to islands. When sea levels rose again, populations became isolated, adapting to limited resources and evolving into smaller species.

These miniature elephants varied by island — those on Cyprus stood about six feet tall, twice the size of the Sicilian and Maltese species. Human arrival around 11,000 years ago led to their rapid extinction through hunting.

Centuries later, Greeks and Romans encountering their large skulls — featuring a single central cavity for the trunk — likely mistook it for a massive eye socket, giving rise to the Cyclops legend. Thus, paleontology and mythology meet in the fossils of these ancient creatures.

Over the Winterfest weekend we had a fellow reenactor bring this over. He made a new handle, pummel and cross guard. The rest is believed to be an original find. I was gobsmacked by the blade. Small fractures indicate the blade broke at some point and smith's used a stacking of metal technique to reforge it back to one piece. Absolutely gorgeous
