🌸 Fengxiang Clay Sculpture – The Art of Color and Spirit from Shaanxi, China 🌸

This vibrant piece is a traditional painted clay sculpture from Fengxiang County, Shaanxi Province — a true gem of Chinese folk art renowned both in China and abroad.

Located in western Guanzhong and governed by Baoji City, Fengxiang boasts a long and rich cultural history. As early as the early 20th century, bronze artifacts from the Western Zhou Dynasty were unearthed here, proving the region’s deep artistic roots. Today, Fengxiang artisans continue to carry forward the essence of “Zhou Culture”, drawing inspiration from ancient bronze inscriptions and taotie motifs, blending tradition with creativity in their colorful clay works.

Among all forms, the tiger motif stands out as the hallmark of Fengxiang clay art.

🐯 Hanging Tigers (Guà Hǔ) are particularly striking — their bold shapes and brilliant colors symbolize strength and good fortune.
✨ The double eyebrows often take the shape of two opposing fish, a pattern that traces back over 6,000 years to the Yangshao culture.
🌶 The nose, representing human ancestry, holds three bright red chilies, symbolizing fiery courage and liveliness.
🌺 The traditional “王” (king) mark on the tiger’s forehead is replaced with a peony, a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
🌾 The surrounding patterns of grains, flowers, and fruits express fertility, growth, and the eternal rhythm of nature.
🎋 The gourd motif, inspired by the Book of Songs phrase “May the vines grow long and unbroken”, conveys wishes for family prosperity and generations of blessing.

Fengxiang clay sculptures embody the warmth, humor, and vitality of Chinese folk life. Their exaggerated forms and joyful colors are not just art — they’re living expressions of cultural heritage that continue to enchant the world. ❤️

✨ Kuixing — The Spirit of Literary Talent and Success ✨

This striking woodblock print depicts Kuixing (魁星), a legendary figure in Chinese culture known as the God of Literature and Examinations. Often portrayed with a brush in hand and standing atop a dragon, Kuixing symbolizes brilliance, creativity, and triumph in scholarly pursuits. 🖋🐉

In ancient times, students prayed to Kuixing for success in the imperial exams — today, he continues to inspire those who seek wisdom and artistic mastery. The constellation above him represents his celestial connection, guiding scholars toward enlightenment and recognition. 🌌📜

This beautiful piece was created by Baiguan (白关), a contemporary Chinese artist who reimagines traditional mythology through modern woodblock techniques. The vivid red seen in the seal and brush tip is Zhusha (朱砂) — a traditional cinnabar pigment historically valued for its auspicious and protective qualities. 🔴

A perfect blend of mythology, artistry, and aspiration — a reminder that knowledge, perseverance, and imagination light the path forward.

Meiqi is not just a place to eat, but also a place to enjoy Chinese contemporary art.

The paper-cuts on the wall showcase Weixian paper-cuts that originated in the Ming Dynasty. It primarily uses yin carving and yang carving techniques, retains the thick, rustic, and bold characteristics of Chinese northern folk paper-cuts.
