This photograph shows Thomas Knott, the gardener of Belmont Park estate in the early 20th century, tending to a flower bed. His employer, Philip Charley, was one of the original ‘Syndicate of Seven’ who founded the Broken Hill Proprietary company (BHP), now the largest mining company in the world. While Charley lived a life of immense wealth in a grand sandstone mansion, Thomas, his wife Susan, and their two daughters lived more modestly in a stone gate house on the estate, known as ‘Belmont Lodge’.

Gain further insights into the life of Thomas Knott through preserved photographs and personal items, now on display in Imprint: Stories from the Archives.

UP CLOSE 🔎 This souvenir pennant from Paradise Gardens highlights the park’s location and main attraction – dinosaurs! Paradise Gardens was a local amusement park that opened in 1975 on the Hawkesbury River at Cattai. Among the park’s key attractions were ‘Prehistoric World’, featuring dinosaur sculptures complete with sound effects; the ‘Enchanted Forest’, containing large-scale scenes from children’s tales; and a range of other family-oriented leisure activities. The park closed in 1986, and the site was later redeveloped into Riverside Oaks golf resort.
