Artspace Sydney

Artspace Sydney Ever changing, ever challenging, Artspace is where audiences encounter the artists and the ideas of our times.
(335)

For the first time since moving into our current premises at the Gunnery building in 1992, Artspace has undertaken substantial changes to update the spaces in this multi-storey gallery and studio complex. Artspace was established in 1983 as an artist-run contemporary art space dedicated to the presentation of contemporary and experimental art in a critical context. In this same year, we opened wit

h our first major exhibition A Different Perspective curated by Terence Maloon in conjunction with the Multicultural Artists Agency at our temporary location in Surry Hills. In response to ever-increasing demand for space by artists, Artspace relocated in 1992 to our current location at the Gunnery in Woolloomooloo; a site renowned for its rich history as a former naval facility and then later in the 1970s as an artists’ squat that hosted studios, performances and exhibitions. Since this time, Artspace has become a recognised site for the production and presentation of visual arts in an expanded field, with an emphasis on the creation of new work. Across our exhibition, studio, symposia, workshop and publishing platforms, Artspace encourages new ideas, risk and experimentation.

Studios are where ideas are tested, practices evolve and ambitious work takes shape.

We're pleased to welcome Remy Faint, Rindon Johnson, Adriana Māhanga-Lear and Haji Oh to the 2026–28 Artspace Studio Program. Working across sculpture, installation, painting, video, performance and interdisciplinary practice, the cohort reflects the breadth and complexity of contemporary art today.

Selected through an open call, the artists will take part in our renewed two-year, rent-free residency model, designed to support sustained artistic development without the pressure of a prescribed outcome. Through time, space, dialogue and long-term support, the Studio Program creates the conditions for artists to experiment, take creative risks and develop new directions in their practice.

We look forward to seeing what emerges over the next two years.

Last night at Artspace, 'Points of Contact: Museums & Biennales Between Worlds' brought together an extraordinary group of curators and museum leaders to reflect on the evolving role of biennales, institutions and curatorial practice across the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

A huge thank you to Mami Kataoka, Adriano Pedrosa, Eungie Joo and Carol Yinghua Lu for such a generous and expansive conversation, moderated by Victor Wang.

Presented as part of Artspace’s International Curators Program in partnership with Mori Art Museum and the Global Art Development (GAD) Project, the evening highlighted the importance of sustained exchange, collaboration, and dialogue between local and international artistic communities.

Programs like these continue to create meaningful connections between Sydney, Japan, and the wider Asia-Pacific region – relationships that extend well beyond the duration of a visit.

Congratulations to Paula do Prado, Artspace resident artist, selected for the third annual co-commission between Art Gallery of New South Wales and Artspace as part of the Contemporary Projects series.

Now in its third year, the partnership supports artists from the Artspace Studio Program to develop ambitious new commissions for presentation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, moving from studio to major institutional exhibition. Do Prado’s practice draws on Southern Hemisphere constellations and celestial mythologies, creating large-scale woven installations informed by Indigenous cosmologies, migration histories, and her Charrúa, Iberian and West African Bantu heritage.

Coming to the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 28 November 2026 – 14 February 2027.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales and Artspace gratefully acknowledge the support of Contemporary Projects patrons Andrew Cameron AM and Cathy Cameron.

Fresh from the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino — who represented the Australian Pavilion at this year’s exhibition — come together for a special event at Artspace, presented by Arts & Cultural Exchange in partnership with Artspace.

Sharing insights into his practice, Khaled Sabsabi will discuss his works ‘conference of one’s self’, presented at the Australian Pavilion, and ‘khalil’, exhibited at the Arsenale, reflecting on the ideas and lived experiences that shape his practice in Venice and beyond.

Moderated by Anne Loxley (ACE) with Kon Gouriotis (Artist Profile), the conversation offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists at a pivotal moment — opening up dialogue around art, identity and lived experience.

Following the successful relaunch of Artspace’s International Curators Program (ICP) through a recent visit by Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Artistic Director of documenta 16, Artspace is pleased to announce the second iteration of the 2026 ICP in partnership with Mori Art Museum’s Global Art Development (GAD) Project. The program continues Artspace’s commitment to research-led exchange, curatorial dialogue, meaningful connections between local and international communities, and long-term international partnership.

Through this partnership, Artspace and the Mori Art Museum GAD Project will jointly host a visiting delegation of 10 Japan-based emerging curators and 4 curatorial mentors for a series of studio visits, professional exchanges, and public conversations engaging with artists, institutions, and contemporary practice across Sydney.

The program culminates in the public discussion 'Points of Contact: Museums & Biennales Between Worlds', bringing together leading international curators and museum directors to reflect on the evolving role of biennales, museums, and curatorial practice within shifting global conditions. The discussion features Adriano Pedrosa (Artistic Director, Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand), Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Art Museum), Eungie Joo (Curator, Writer, Educator), and Carol Yinghua Lu (Director of Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum), moderated by Victor Wang (Executive Director, Artspace).

Cantonese opera cinema becomes a technology of transmission in Ming Wong’s new commission ‘Fata Morgana (I)’, realised in collaboration with artist Liam Morgan.

Shaped by migration, memory and technological transformation, Wong continues his exploration of how cultural narratives circulate, fragment and persist across time and geography.

Fata Morgana (I) is a major new site-specific commission by Berlin-based Singaporean artist Ming Wong for Artspace

How do acts of performance reframe the time of labour and its gendered divisions?

Presented alongside Michaela Gleave’s exhibition ‘Event Horizon’, this panel brings together Astrid Lorange, Sarah Rodigari and Zoe Theodore in conversation on the intersections of maintenance labour, gendered divisions of work and ecological strain.

Focusing on Gleave’s Universal Maintenance, the discussion explores acts of repair, repetition and care as invisible yet essential forms of labour, and considers how contemporary art reflects broader questions of ecological and social maintenance.

The program will be followed by a live performance of Universal Maintenance by the artist.

‘These castings are heavy, like the old metal, but they also carry something gentle –the trace of sand, wind and time.’ – Desmond Woodforde

Both ethereal and industrial, the Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara artist’s bush-based sculpting practice expresses ancestral stories and knowledge. Formed by hand, he draws into red sand with an air compressor before casting shapes with the repurposed aluminium of abandoned desert cars.

‘Kinara Tjuta (many moons)’ marks Woodforde’s first solo exhibition in Sydney, now showing at Artspace until 7 June: https://artspace.org.au/ideas-platform/desmond-woodforde-kinara-tjuta-many-moons
