We are thrilled to announce Keroshin Govender as FCMG’s 2027 Artist in Residence. As part of the gallery’s residency program, Keroshin will receive a studio rent-free for 12 months, financial support for buying materials and paid an artist fee as he works on the residency’s outcome, a solo exhibition at FCMG. Congratulations Keroshin, we can’t wait to have you working on site with us.

Keroshi is a multi-disciplinary artist working across ceramics, painting, fabric dyeing and installation. His practice explores complexity within the South African Indian community, particularly during apartheid. Rather than centring broad political narratives, he draws from the intimate family stories that recount everyday experiences of love, ambition, hardship, and adventure.

Through layering processes across ceramics, glazing, painting, and dyeing, Keroshin combines archival photographs, patterns, and visual fragments to construct works that both reveal and obscure histories. Personal and community archives—especially family photographs—form the foundation of his practice. By overlapping and concealing visual information, his practice examines how identity is performed, negotiated, and protected within South Asian diasporic communities.

SÔNG SỐNG SONG by James Nguyen is currently on display at Fairfield City Museum & Gallery until July 18.

Pictured here, 水指 Mizusashi, circa 11th–14th century, brings together layered histories of ritual, movement and exchange across Vietnam, Japan and Southeast Asia. A Lý–Trần dynasty thạp gốm hoa nâu (Brown Flower water container) from Thanh Hóa, later used in Japanese Momoyama tea ceremonies, is recontextualised alongside a jambangan bowl traditionally used in Java for washing visitors’ feet before entering the home.

Filled with water from Burramatta (Parramatta) River, the vessels speak to cultural transmission, migration and diasporic memory.

The work rests on moulded white plastic chairs previously used in Nguyen’s 2014 performance Pants of Eva, grounding these historical objects within contemporary, everyday materials.

Currently exhibiting in FCMG's group exhibition 'We Are Here' is 'Fire holds memory' by Dharawal artist Michael Fardon.

“This piece began as a quiet conversation between Elder Uncle John Dickson and I, a moment where his presence filled the room with his unmistakable mix of humour, wisdom, and lived history. I wanted the painting to feel like you’re sitting with him, really sitting, long enough for the deeper layers of his story to rise to the surface. I first sketched the underlying composition to feel the rhythm of the artwork before committing to oil paint, from there I set out not only to capture his physical likeness but the quiet gravity that surrounds him. The smoke became a vessel for his three totems to speak alongside him, each one rising as a whisper of lineage and belonging. In the end, the artwork feels like an invitation to pause, listen, and recognise the cultural weight he carries into the We Are Here exhibition.” – Artist, Michael Fardon.

Currently hanging wall to wall across the gallery space is James Nguyen's shirt installation for his exhibition SÔNG SỐNG SONG.

This artwork is made up of over 100 donated white business shirts washed in Leachate contaminated Burramatta (Parramatta) River water. Each shirt has been buttoned together to form a continuous chain and suspended using bird deterrent Humming Tape.

Developed as a new iteration of the artist’s White Shirts installation, the exhibition distinguishes itself through its focus on personal and collective memory, experiences that endure long after time and space have passed.

The poetic alliteration SÔNG SỐNG SONG references, resonates and lingers in the space between past and present, much like memory itself.

Nguyen invites us into this space through storytelling, language, song and place, with Western Sydney at its core.

At the heart of Fairfield City Museum & Gallery’s relationship to our community is the way we connect art and life. We are inspired by stories drawn from and about our community, and we collaborate with artists whose practices explore belonging, place and experiences that carry universal meaning.
