‘If we look at the list of artists relegated to this year’s Salon des Refusés, at a glance we see names such as Ross Laurie, John R. Walker, Mary Tonkin, Euan Macleod, Tony Costa and Robert Malherbe – all noted landscapists. Are we to believe that these artists, and many others who submitted entries, produced work of inferior quality to the mishmash at the AGNSW? It’s not merely implausible, it’s insulting to artists of ability and integrity.’

‘If you want to feel especially gaslit this year, go to SH Ervin gallery, across the city, for the Salon des Refusés. This is the annual showcase of the paintings rejected by the Archibald prize judges – but there are so many portraits that could be swapped into either exhibition without anyone batting an eyelid..’

John Wolseley’s stunning work in Holding Ground is based on Martin Royds magnificently regenerated farm Jillamatong near Braidwood.

' I was bent on researching the remnant bits of country where the river systems behaved and worked in the way they used to before white settlement. In particular, I became obsessed with how many of Australia’s inland rivers formed ‘chains of ponds’ along the floodplains.

Charles Massy wrote in his revolutionary book – Call of the Reed Warbler – “Like many before me, I dearly wish I could be transported back in time to go for a long walk through the pastoral ecosystems of Australia prior to white settlement. Just once to walk across grasslands un-grazed by the cloven-hooved animals of white settlers; …to feel the soft ground underneath and access the depths of layered mulch; to witness fully hydrated landscapes and see how the original chains of ponds looked and functioned; to hear the cry of bustard and reed warblers…to glimpse bettongs and bilbies busy about burrows beside inland streams, and to listen to insect and birdsong under river red gums and she-oaks.”'

Holding Ground is in its last weeks so hurry before it closes on Sunday 3 May.

Jo Davenport’s Love Song Lost depicts the love song of the critically endangered Regent Honeyeaters. With the song critical for their survival, the species is dwindling due to the young birds losing their tune of the melody due to the scarcity of their elders.

We are saddened by the passing of Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO and extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Dame Marie was a wonderful supporter of the arts and regular visitor to the Gallery and Cafe. Here she is pictured at the 2013 opening of Peter Rushforth: All Fired Up, which she also officially opened.

In 2014 the Gallery hosted a farewell dinner to thank and acknowledge her outstanding service to the people of New South of Wales.

We will miss her gracious presence and unfailing support.
