Gumnuts by Marguerite Luntungan celebrates the beauty and character of the Australian landscape through delicate brushwork and a deep appreciation of nature. Drawing on her studies in the Sumi-e tradition with renowned masters in Taiwan and China, Marguerite combines traditional techniques with her own artistic style from her Northern Tablelands garden studio.

Mrs Mundy’s Holden by Liz Powell draws inspiration from the rich history and distinctive character of the New England Tablelands, weaving together story, place and memory through a layered mixed media approach.

An artist and educator for more than 40 years, Liz has developed an extensive creative practice encompassing drawing, papermaking, dyeing, stitch, painting, printmaking, artists’ books and 3D construction. Her works often combine multiple techniques, creating textured surfaces and compositions that reflect a deep connection to landscape and local history.

Sunset March by Linda Nye captures the spirit of the Australian landscape. Based in Tenterfield in the New England Ranges, Linda is known for creating evocative contemporary landscapes that reflect the character and resilience of rural Australia.

With more than 30 years of painting experience, Linda works in oils and acrylics to create scenes that are not simply representations of place, but artistic interpretations shaped by colour, texture and imagination.

📅 Upcoming: Sticks, Fibres + Found Things Weaving Workshop - Surat

Join artist Claudia Williams from Ilani Creative for a workshop playing and experimenting with weaving using sticks, fibres, fabric, wire and found materials.

We’ll explore weaving, wrapping, knotting, binding and layering, with lots of room to experiment and see where the materials take us.

What to bring:

Before the workshop, we'd love you to have a little rummage around at home. There's no need to buy anything new. Check your sewing box, cupboards, shed or garden and see what treasures you can find to incorporate into your artwork.

Fabric Strips:
🔶 Old clothing
🔶 Fabric offcuts
🔶 Ribbon
🔶 Torn textiles
🔶 Interesting fibres and materials
🔶 Fine Wire

Fine craft wire:
🔶 Reclaimed copper wire

Fairy Lights:
🔶 Old battery-operated or solar fairy lights on fine copper wire are perfect for weaving through the artwork.

Found Objects:
🔶 Beads
🔶 Buttons
🔶 Thread or cord
🔶 Small objects that can be woven, wrapped, tied or attached
🔶 Old earrings, coins, fishing lures or other unique items that tell a story

Sticks and Twigs:
🔶 Approximately 15-20 fine twigs, around 30-40cm long
🔶 Sticks should be flexible rather than dry and brittle
🔶 Poinciana, bottlebrush and wattle twigs are excellent options
🔶 Slightly curved or wonky sticks are welcome, though straighter sticks are often easier to work with

Tip: Give each stick a gentle bend test before bringing it along. If it flexes without snapping, it should be perfect for the workshop.

The most important thing to bring is your curiosity and willingness to experiment. Some of the most inspiring creations come from unexpected materials and a playful approach to making. 😊

Calling all young photographers across the Maranoa!

Are you looking for another fun thing to do these school holidays?

Join professional photographer Trina Ayers - Photographer for a free, fun, hands-on workshop where you'll learn creative photography tips and techniques using your own mobile phone, tablet or digital camera.

You'll then have the opportunity to submit your favourite image for the chance to be exhibited at the Walk of Art and Surat on Balonne Gallery as part of Youth Week 2027. Plus, prizes will be awarded to the top three exhibited works!

Established in 1994, Borderline Arts is a community-based arts organisation bringing together more than 50 artists from across southern Queensland, northern New South Wales and beyond.
