Curators and detectives aren’t as different as you might think 🕵️🫆🎨

When preparing for Buxton Contemporary’s latest exhibition, Curator Carol Yinghua Lu had to track down lost works from China’s art scene in the 80s and 90s.

In some cases, works by artist collective New Measurement Group were purposely destroyed and have been recreated for the first time in Australia.

Poetry goes no further than language is exhibiting Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

VCA alumni Darcey Bella Arnold takes over Buxton Contemporary’s latest exhibition with flashes of orange. 🍊🧡

But it isn’t about the fruit or even the colour. Arnold’s long-running fascination with orange stems from the word itself.

See her commission as part of our new exhibition, Poetry goes no further than language. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

Poetry goes no further than language is NOW OPEN! 🍊

In 1980s China, artists like the New Measurement Group and Qian Weikang began to reconsider what art could be. Their works circulated through small networks of artists and critics before many of the works were dispersed, dismantled or destroyed.

Now, they’re back.

Reconstructed and reunited for the first time in Australia, this is a rare look at a movement that reshaped the rules.

Featuring a new commission by Melbourne-based artist Darcey Bella Arnold.

Curated by Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu.

Congratulations are in order for Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu.

The curators of our upcoming exhibition, Poetry goes no further than language, have been selected to curate the 19th Istanbul Biennial!

Since 2011, Liu and Carol have curated a series of thematic and solo exhibitions based on their ongoing research on the resonance of contemporary art in China.

Through careful research and reconstruction, they have brought rarely exhibited works to our new exhibition opening this Friday 1 May.

Buxton Contemporary is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of artist, colleague and friend Dr Cate Consandine.

In 2024 we were privileged to work closely with Cate to present her significant multi-channel film work RINGER as part of our exhibition The same crowd never gathers twice.

Alongside this exhibition, Cate convened the symposium View From a Body and was later invited to guest curate an expanded version of the program at the e-flux Screening Room in New York, which included the work of ten Australian artists.

As an artist, educator and mentor, Cate inspired and supported students and fellow artists through her commitment to teaching and to the broader Melbourne arts community. Her intellectual rigour, her generosity, as well as energy and warmth will be truly missed.

Our sincerest sympathies to Cate’s family and friends at this difficult time.

We’ve reached the end of Hany Armanious: Stone Soup and yet, it’s been brought to our attention that some visitors still don’t realise the autumn leaves aren’t organic and the Blu-Tak didn’t come from Officeworks.

Painstakingly cast in resin, these doubles are so detailed and precise, they make you question what‘s right in front of you.

Featuring more than 80 works spanning over 15 years of practice, Hany Armanious: Stone Soup was curated by Laurence Sillars with Samantha Comte and Charlotte Day.

Buxton Contemporary is now closed for the installation of our next exhibition, Poetry goes no further than language, opening 1 May.

Encounter a living, growing assemblage taking shape in the foyer of Buxton Contemporary. Drawing on Hany Armanious’s playful spirit of transformation and improvisation, this hands-on activity invites you to see everyday objects in a new light to uncover their hidden poetic humour.

Between 13–24 January, choose from a selection of everyday objects and add them to an unfolding sculpture, deepening your connection to the themes of perception and play in Stone Soup.
