COUNTERPOISE CELEBRATES THE POWER OF SUBTLE CHANGE IN NEW SACC EXHIBITION
A new exhibition now open at Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre (SACC) celebrates the quiet force between stillness and change in a focused but gentle contemplation of the Hunter Valley landscape.
Hunter Valley-based artist Hanna Kay zooms in on the subtle forces that define the character of the local landscape in Counterpoise, exploring how grasses and rocks offer up clues to subtle landscape forces in a balance of fragility, endurance, and continual natural transformation.
In the first time the internationally-acclaimed painter has exhibited in Singleton, the works featured in Counterpoise examine the flow, rhythm and repetition of grasses, as well as how nature’s circular processes move between wholeness and fragmentation in rocks.
The exhibition was officially opened by Deputy Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue George on Friday 15 May.
Hanna Kay will also feature in a special program of events during the exhibition period including a SACC chat with the artist on Sunday 31 May from 1-2pm and an oil and tempera masterclass on Sunday 28 June from 1-3pm.
Dwight Graham, Council’s Director Corporate + Community Services said he couldn’t think of a more fitting first exhibition to present Hanna Kay’s work.
“Hanna Kay has shown in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, as well as a number of leading regional galleries, and we’re very pleased to now be counted amongst their ranks,” he said.
“Counterpoise is a wonderful way to encourage us all to look for the small shifts – whether it’s in our local landscapes or in other areas of our lives – that underpin ongoing and evolving transformation, and to highlight the change that is happening around us and to us all the time.
“What’s even more exciting is that Hanna Kay will be in the gallery to meet with people during the exhibition, first at a free SACC chat to talk about her inspiration and her creative process, and then to work with some of our local established and perhaps not-so-establish artists at a workshop later in June.
“So as well as viewing the works in the exhibition, it’s a great opportunity for people to get involved.”
Courtney Wagner, Singleton Council’s Coordinator Arts and Culture (Gallery Director), said Counterpoise presented a whole new experience for visitors to the gallery.
“Hanna Kay is a prolific and widely exhibited artist, and we are thrilled to be including new, never-before-exhibited works within this show,” she said.
“I am looking forward to visitors experiencing the sense of stillness in motion that Hanna’s work evokes.
“The gallery has been subtly transformed, creating an atmosphere that invites contemplation and encourages moments of reflection, quite literally.”
Counterpoise runs until 9 August. For more information about all the programs at the SACC, visit 🔗 singletonartsandculturalcentre.com.au
