Kaiela Arts

Kaiela Arts Kaiela Arts is a place for First Peoples with connections to Yorta Yorta Country, to create art and share their stories.

Established in 2006, Kaiela Arts is an Aboriginal art centre located in Shepparton situated on the traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation. Our work drives important outcomes for local Aboriginal artists and our community. Located on the ground floor of the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), Kaiela Arts is a gallery, shop and studio space. Our storytelling and culture are embedded throughout the mus

eum with brass and granite inlays in the floor and screen-printed fabrics that feature designs by our artists. Our art centre offers visitors an opportunity to view and purchase authentic Aboriginal art. Kaiela Arts differentiates itself as promoting the traditional linear and Xray styles of the South-eastern Aboriginal people. These styles come from Yorta Yorta Country and resonate thousands of years of cultural practises. Kaiela Arts provides an important space for local Aboriginal artists and community to connect to culture through the arts. We strengthen community by sharing culture, learning from our past and empowering future generations. Our studio space is used by artists to explore a variety of traditional and contemporary art making techniques including painting, ceramics, woodwork, printing and fashion. We create ideas by working with lessons from the land to create and share quality artwork. Annually we host exhibitions and events during the Shepparton Festival. In Autumn, our popular Turtle Muster brings the wider community into the gallery

🖤💛❤️ PROUD & STRONG 🖤💛❤️ ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT * This is just some of what your support of our Proud & Strong appeal funds - more opportunities for more young First Nations students to learn, connect, grow in a cultural protected environment with Elders, artists and each other. There is still time to take advantage of our appeal to triple your donation, head over to https://galnyatj-schools-program-2026.raiselysite.com before end of Saturday 30 May.

A group of enthusiastic St. George's Road primary school students joined us last Friday for a half-day Galnyatj Schools Program session. We had time observing and exploring outdoors, hands-on clay work in the studio, a gallery talk and sharing cultural stories.

The students also witnessed a dramatic moment featuring a heron, a rakali and a fish they shared for lunch, helping the students and our Senior Artist in Residence, Lyn Thorpe (Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wamba), to form their own stories on Yorta Yorta Country. It was an unexpected, beautiful and meaningful moment!

✨️ Thank you to the Creative Victoria team including Darcy Hytt (Palawa), Rhys Wells (Wiradjuri, Gamilaroi), Janina Harding (Meriam Mer) and Rochelle Duke for visiting us last month and talking us through upcoming opportunities for project funding and the 2027 Victorian First Peoples Art and Design Fair. Also a shout out to Neil Morris (Yorta Yorta) and Glenda Nicholls (Waddi Waddi, Ngarrindjeri and Yorta Yorta) for coming along to share insights from their experiences of applying for funding.

It was wonderful to hear more about all that Creative Victoria is doing to support First Nations creatives to develop their skills and professional reach on significant platforms. It was an informative session that enabled us all to connect and start breaking down some of the barriers that our artists face when applying for these vital opportunities . Thank you for all who attended! 🖤 💛 ❤️

Our Curator & Gallery Manager, Chloe Jones, plus Art Centre Manager, Anita Larkin, had the amazing opportunity to attend the Indigenous Art Centre Alliance (IACA) Art Centre Gathering in Cairns last week... and they have returned energized and inspired!

We are deeply grateful to IACA and all their member art centres for including and welcoming us. As one of only two art centres in Victoria without the support of a peak body, it was so wonderful to be learning in a space with other people who are as committed and passionate about this work as we are. And to be able to share some insights into how we are engaging young people on Yorta Yorta Country and nurturing our next generation of creatives and cultural leaders.

It was invaluable to be in the room for four days of hands-on learning, knowledge-sharing and conversation, covering an incredible range of topics from managing online sales, nurturing artist relationships and facilitating successful artist career pathways.

More from Anita on the experience:
" We also reflected on what’s most important to our sector right now as the government seeks submissions for the new National Cultural Policy, Revive #2. One of its pillars, Strong Cultural Infrastructure, for us is not only about buildings, it’s about nurturing and investing in our workforce across the full spectrum of entry-to-leadership pathways that sustain First Nations creative practices and careers over time. Kaiela Arts is actively growing a new generation of First Nations creative workers in a region with significant gaps in tertiary creative industries education. And without opportunities to participate in events like this, that pipeline will not hold.

So a huge thank you to IACA. See you next time. 🙏 "

🖤 💛 ❤️ PROUD & STRONG✨️ We are so excited to announce that all donations made between now and 30 May will now be TRIPLED!!! Donate now at: https://galnyatj-schools-program-2026.raiselysite.com/

With thanks to the Department of Rural Health at University of Melbourne who, just last week, offered to match any donations to our PROUD & STRONG fundraising appeal for the Galnyatj Schools Program.

This means that every dollar donated between now and May 30 will now be TRIPLED - matched by both the Department of Rural Health at University of Melbourne and Creative Australia.

So, if we reach our $15,000 goal in donations, we can fully subsidise four-week in-studio cultural arts programs for over 150 local First Nations students over the next 12 months.

Don't miss your chance to TRIPLE YOUR IMPACT on the future of First Nations people. All donations are tax deductible. Donate now at link in bio.

We are so grateful for our wonderful community, partners and supporters who have helped us get this far already 💖💖 🥰

Last week our CEO Linda Nieuwenhuizen attended the Breakfast with Purpose, held by Kaiela Arts, a special event for local Aboriginal businesses and Plan Champions for the Goulburn Murray Regional Productivity and Prosperity Plan (GMRPPP), of which C4GS is one.
Art Centre Manager Anita Larkin spoke on what equal economic participation, particularly in the arts sector, looked like and how local businesses can engage with and support First Nations culture and creativity.
A panel of speakers talked about the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation’s Yirramboi Initiative, supporting Yorta Yorta economic participation and self-determination, along with the business mentoring service and how important creative art is to First Nations culture and economic sustainability.
