Beechmont artists, Joolie Green and Kathrine Moeller, currently have their latest exhibition, It’s a Kind of Magic, on display at the Loft Gallery in Redcliffe.

Building on the exhibitions continued success, the showing has been extended until October 21.

With an emphasis on magical realism, It’s a Kind of Magic, celebrates women across a diverse range of scenarios and experiences.

“We just found that we just love painting women in all sorts of historical and cultural scenarios in different countries,” Joolie said.

“It always seems to be a theme around women – being women ourselves.”

Kathrine reflected on her favourite piece in the exhibition, titled We Come in Many Guises.

“I wanted the painting to show the tension between how we present ourselves and the freedom that exists beneath the surface,” she said.

“The woman, restrained by elaborate clothing and makeup, is set against the openness and simple beauty of the Australian landscape.”

Joolie and Katherine first met at Beechmont and, after bonding over their similar artistic interests, have been closely collaborating ever since.

“We met at yoga class and up here in Beechmont, and we started chatting about how we’re both artists, and we get along extremely well as close friends,” Joolie said.

“We just found that it’s a wonderful motivation to find somebody else on the same page as you.”

They are looking forward to future exhibitions, with plans to show their work at in towns across the Scenic Rim.

“I have something coming up in Canungra soon. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but yes, I’m going to be having a little show in Canungra,” said Joolie.

“And of course, we’re very interested in Tambourine Mountain.”

Many of the art pieces were directly inspired by the surrounding hinterland landscapes.

“I have painted quite a few pictures of the local area and I’m particularly inspired by Numinbar Valley, and Mount Warning from the Rosins lookout, which is my particular love,” she said.

“There’s lots to paint up here. There really is. It’s the most glorious area.”

Kathrine Moeller Art – Ladies with Fans Series

My Ladies with Fans series is very special to me. I loved exploring the stories, colours and symbols of different cultures, using each fan as a little “painting within a painting.”

I created five ladies using acrylic, fabric, paper, sequins and lots of texture. Most of the paintings in the series have sold, but the first two ladies — Maiko Ichisumi and Sophie — are still available.

Both are currently exhibited at THE LOFT Gallery in It’s a Kind of Magic, featuring Joolie Green Art and Kathrine Moeller Art.
