COUNCILLORS VOTE FOR A RISE IN EXPENSES: - Following heated discussion, $150 per day expenses was agreed upon to cover travelling and accommodation costs when attending local authority conferences etc. These costs could be quite considerable.
ANGRY MOTORIST: A parking fine was paid in one and 4 cent stamps by an irate motorist who considered himself hard done by.
CATHOLIC DEBUTANTE BALL A SUCCESS: 20 debutantes were presented before a capacity crowd which danced its way pas midnight.
OBITUARY - MARY ELIZABETH CROSSLEY, did aged 91 was an old local identity of Conway and Proserpine survived by four children.
RAY CLIFFORD WARREN, an old local resident, died aged 54 following a long illness.
DOREEN MAY WEST, a member of another old local family died aged 73.
CANE HARVESTING: One million tonnes is being predicted this year.
WHITSUNDAY BOXING CLUB: A crowd of 250 enjoyed the night with local wins from Martin Turner, Martin Goldsbury, Shortie McGoldrick and Greg Meade.
BATON TWIRLERS: Whitsunday Roulette Baton Twirlers performed at the flea market at the Cultural Hall on Saturday.
RUGBY UNION: Raiders defeated Mackay Keas despite missing half back Peter Chengody who was playing for North Queensland.
MOTHER'S DAY FUNCTION: Women's Section of the National Party held a successful Mothers' Day at the Cultural Hall. Gladys Wesche received warm applause for "The mother with most children" with eleven and no fewer than thirty four grandchildren.
HIGH SCHOOL: Year 11 Camp took place at Cape Hillsborough.
Congratulations to Les Humphries and Bradley Watson, chosen for the NQ Squash team with Juanita Lewis chosen as reserve.

SUPPORT FOR RODEO: Proserpine Chamber of Commerce will support the advent of the Australian Championship Rodeo in May with a Main Street Mardi Gras, late night shopping, increased lighting and taped music for the Main Street Shopping Centre. Local poet Reg Beck described the occasion in verse.
BIG SURPRISE: If you go down to the Cultural Hall today you're sure of a big surprise. Family Day Care Scheme is hosting its first Annual Teddy Bear's Picnic on Saturday 17th May.
CARNIVAL CAPERS: Cannonvale School is busy preparing entertainment and stalls for the annual school fete on the Saturday before Mother's Day.
HAYMAN ISLAND: Ansett's super luxury ocean transport
, the "Sun Goddess" promoted the island over May Day Weekend with pleasure cruises out of Mackay and Airlie. Also WTA were organising a big promotion with help from their sponsor TAA>
HIGH SCHOOL REPORT: Whitsunday School Trials took place for hockey, squash and soccer and the North Queensland Netball trials took place at Ingham where Katrina and Tammy Mullins were both selected to travel to Brisbane in the NQ team.
ARL: Airlie Bloods went down narrowly to Mackay City 62-54 at the Proserpine Showgrounds on Saturday. ARL regional coaching director gave Airlie Little Bleeders a coaching session at Cannonvale School.
WHITSUNDAY SAILING CLUB: 100 boats of different sizes took part in squally conditions. The only division won outright by WSC in the May Regatta was the Stingray Class taken out by Brendan Howes and Stuart Lock.
A YELLOW SUBMARINE: The arrival of a twenty metre long yellow submarine was immanent and should prove "A Great asset" to the Whitsundays.
THREE TRACK RACE MEETING: Proserpine Motor Cycle Club held this at Dray Park, attracting 45 entries including 5 speedway side car teams one of which is the only ladies sidecar team in Queensland comprising of Debbie Broome and Tamara Gailes. Russell Magee won the unlimited section and Clint Burke won the P*e Wees.
JUNIOR SOCCER: Whitsunday entered 2 teams in the traditional Mackay Under 10 Carnivals in whcih goalie Neil McBride and forward Connie Hinschen played particularly well.
RUGBY LEAGUE: Foley Shield Mackay Sea Eagles defeated Whitsunday 16-2

A lovely visit from passengers off a cruise ship today. This family had a special reason for visiting. Not only celebrating a milestone birthday but the wife and family of a previous business owner Mr Noel McClintock of Nolen’s Jewellers and Watchmakers, which opened in 1954. Shop was located near Shoebiz in the Dobbins building

Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This was successfully reformed in Proserpine, following co-ordination by Tony Drummond. Executive members of the Board were appointed. Tom Hill is the President.
HOME ECONOMIC DINE OUT:- Nine High School Home Ec. students enjoyed a dining exercise with their teachers at Angelo's Restaurant to 'study' restaurant style food presentation in a delicious way.
HAILEY'S COMET ON VIEW: Les Bell from Jubilee Pocket said that tonight should be a good viewing night from 11pm to midnight looking quite different from when he saw it in 1910!
PRIMARY SCHOOL CAPTAINS: Nicole Churchward, Adam Smith, Jane Howard and Brett Buckley were presented with their badges at a special ceremony.
RETURN TO PARADISE:- Bill and Celia Staume, the first couple to be married on Hayman Island in 1958 returned to the island, having lived and worked in nine different countries since that happy day.
LINDERMAN ISLAND REMAINS NATIONAL PARK: Less than 2% of Queensland remains under national park protection so Proserpine Wildlife Preservation Society's campaign to preserve the Island's National Park status was a major victory.
MARINA'S PLANNED: Visiting Minister for Water Resources, Martin Tenni inspected the sites of four proposed marinas in the Whitsundays. Local's concern about indiscriminate developers was discussed. The decision to 'nourish' Airlie Beach with 50,000 cubic metres of sand should be delayed.
RUGBY LEAGUE: Brahmans 20 defeated Collinsville Miners 10.
CLEARING THE WALKWAY: The Bicentennial Committee applauded the local community for such good volunteer work in clearing the walkway showing the spirit of the early pioneers.
SWIMMING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: Trainer of the year was Marcus Mudie. Monthly improver was Michelle Perkins.

FEW PEOPLE WANT A DINGO BEACH BLOCK.- At the auction to sell 38 blocks only four were sold, none of them to locals. The blame was felt to be a dilatory attitude to removal of squatters from the Lands Department which was typified by the advice that they would be "goning shortly". Prices for the blocks ranged from $30,000 down to $18,000.
90 YEARS FOR CANNONVALLEY PIONEER, ALICE SMITH.- Her birthday party at the Ex-Services Club was attended by her many friends and family.
OBITUARY:- Lorenzo Alssandro {Alex} Pastega, born in Northern Italy in 1910, came to the Calen District aged 17 and remained in the Proserpine Area for the rest of his life. He is survived by a son, daughters and 5 grandchildren.
EILEEN GORDON, NEE CONDON, died just one month short of 90 years. She came to teach at the Cannonvalley school until 1919 when she resigned to marry Bill Gordon. Eileen had a keen interest in local sporting, school, social and community affairs.
MR/MISS PROSERPINE:- Judging took place by Tolma Camm and Edna Clarke for this competition designed to raise money for forthcoming orientation trip to Brisbane.
SUCCESS FOR DEBATING TEAM: Alison Walker, Marijke Walker and Shaun O'Dowd defeated Bowen and go to the second round to meet Collinsville.
PONY CLUB: - Proserpine Pony Club held its first rally day at Tailing Gully last Sunday week.
PROSERPINE MOTOR CYCLE CLUB: - Held trials over obstacle courses organised by Alan Kurkowski. Local successful riders were Steven Madeo and Charlie Dair.
CEDAR CREEK CLEAN UP - Airlie Beach Rotaract Club spent Sunday afternoon clearing up rubbish from the falls. The rubbish contained a disgusting amount of broken bottles.
SOCCER:- Whitsunday Knights lost 6 -2 to Mackay City.
RUGBY LEAGUE:- Brahmans toppled previously unbeaten Collinsville Miners 20 - 10 in pre season final. Best player award won by Richard Dray.
FAUST BROS. PRICES: - 250gm Ginger Biscuits 51 cents.
