Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery acknowledges the Nukunu people as the traditional custodians of Thalpiri Yarta, on which the gallery stands. We also pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging of the Nukunu Nation, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal people present. Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery was first established in 1992, exhibiting in the old baggage room of the closed passenger railway station in Port Pirie. The redevelopment of the railway station into the Regional Tourism and Arts Centre in 1994 included a dedicated A class art gallery. Port Pirie Regional Gallery is the principal provider of visual arts and crafts in the Port Pirie and the Southern Flinders Ranges. We deliver opportunities for the people of the Southern Flinders region to value and understand the importance of art and culture in our community. Opening Hours
The Gallery is open daily 9 am to 5pm, Monday to Friday
Saturday and Sunday 10-2pm
(closed 25 December)

General admission to the Gallery is free. Parking
Parking is available in the Visitors Information Centre Car Park off Mary Elie Street. Gallery Shop
The Gallery Shop is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (closed 25 December) Open Saturday and Sunday 10am-2pm.

💙 It’s time to talk about dementia 💙

This week, 21–27 September, is Dementia Action Week 2026.

This Dementia Action Week, we’re inviting our community to come together, have a conversation and experience our timely exhibition Richard Lewer: Steve.

Richard Lewer’s Steve gently explores the impact of dementia.

An animated film comprising thousands of paintings tells the story of Steve and his family as they grapple with his symptoms.
As a counterpoint, paintings of memories drawn from Lewer’s life are shown beside the film. Made on tabletops, the table is understood as a site where memories form. It’s here that dinners are held, bills are paid, and funerals are arranged.
Richard Lewer is a visual storyteller recognised for works that focus on the human condition. With a longstanding interest in the relationship between art and health, Steve considers memory as a phenomenon that is inherently both fragile and mysterious.

Dementia Australia reminds us that talking openly about dementia can help improve understanding, reduce stigma and discrimination, and connect people with support.

Richard Lewer’s Steve is a gentle exploration of a family coming to terms with a dementia diagnosis.

An animated film comprising thousands of paintings tells the story of Steve and his family as they cope with the impact of his illness and the changes to their lives.

As a counterpoint, paintings of memories drawn from Lewer’s life are shown beside the film. Made on tabletops, the table is understood as a site around which life’s most beautiful, mundane and challenging moments occur. It’s here that dinners are held, bills are paid, and funerals are arranged.

Richard Lewer is a visual storyteller recognised for works that focus on the complexities of the human condition. With a longstanding interest in the relationship between art and health, Steve suggests memory as a phenomenon that is both fragile and inherently mysterious.

A wonderful evening celebrating the launch of Richard Lewer: Steve at the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery a few weeks ago.

Thank you to our special guest speaker, Elspeth Pitt, Senior Curator, Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia, for sharing her insights into Richard Lewer’s compelling practice. Special thanks to Mayor Leon Stephens for officially opening the exhibition, and to thank you also to everyone who joined us for the opening.

This compelling work by Richard Lewer, which explores memory and the impact of dementia on families, has embarked on a three-year tour to communities across Australia, kicking off right here in Port Pirie.

Richard Lewer: Steve is a gentle exploration of a family coming to terms with a dementia diagnosis.

An animated film comprising thousands of paintings tells the story of Steve and his family as they cope with the impact of his illness and the changes to their lives.

As a counterpoint, paintings of memories drawn from Lewer’s life are shown beside the film. Made on tabletops, the table is understood as a site around which life’s most beautiful, mundane and challenging moments occur. It’s here that dinners are held, bills are paid, and funerals are arranged.

🖼️ A powerful story of memory, family and connection is coming to Port Pirie.

Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery will present Richard Lewer: Steve, a moving exhibition exploring dementia through art, memory and storytelling.

At the heart of the exhibition is an animated film created from thousands of hand-painted images, following Steve and his family as they navigate a dementia diagnosis and its impact on their lives.

The exhibition opens Friday 28 August and runs until Sunday 8 November 2026.

Join us for the opening of Richard Lewer: Steve, a moving exhibition by acclaimed Australian artist Richard Lewer. Through an animated film created from thousands of paintings and a series of intimate works exploring memory, family and everyday life, Steve reflects on the experience of dementia and its impact on those we love.
