Project: Gardeners of Port Noarlunga Reef

Gardeners of Port Noarlunga Reef explores the regeneration of the Port Noarlunga Reef following the harmful algal bloom through performative folk art. Using data and imagery gathered with snorkelers and divers and documented on the citizen science platform iNaturalist, the community is invited to create costumes that tenderly perform stewardship and care. Zoë Brooks’ practice positions the handmade in direct dialogue with encroaching civilising technologies, employing folk arts as a critical tool to translate complex biological, environmental, and ecological issues.

Watch this space for community activations and invitations.

Project – DIGITAL_ MARINE_CONSERVATION_NOARLUNGA2026.EXE

This immersive, digital projection work will be the second edition of a digital exploration of the local underwater environment - a low-fi nature survey of the Noarlunga reef. This project is an ongoing citizen science/art project examining the importance of actual conservation over the reliance on poor digital representations as meaningful replacements of an extinct species.

Exhibiting outcomes in the Wash House in December.

Throwback | Mary Pulford
Artist in Residence, 30 June - 28 September 2020
UNFORGOTTEN

Mary Pulford is an Adelaide based visual artist, whose first love is of print making, and in particular artists books and book objects.

During her residency, Pulford will return to her Honours directed study which involved investigating the form and function of artists books and book objects. She will aim to create artists books/book objects by collecting and documenting the traces of life in the local Onkaparinga environment, using printmaking and experimental media.

The resulting archive would be a catalogue of the current environment, and therefore Unforgotten.

THINGNESS OF STUFF

Coming home can mean many things. For some, it conjures a curious combination of associations including warmth, nostalgia, anxiety and excitement. Indeed, Home is usually much more than a house. It can be a person, a feeling or a place. When strong, our connections to home instil our most formative and idealistic values. At its core, it represents something on this planet which gives us the freedom to be ourselves; to explore and express safely and to belong. Installed within the domestic design of Sauerbier House, a residence with many past lives and cast against a backdrop of home-isolation, Arlon Hall unpacks what it means to return home in his artistic practice. This exhibition is presented as part of SALA Festival 2020 and is as an outcome of the inaugural City of Onkaparinga Contemporary Curator Award (2019).

Celebrating 10 Years! 🎉

Throwback | Jake Novick
Artist in Residence, 30 March - 28 June 2020
SLOW BURN

Using landscape as a metaphor for belonging and loss, Slow Burn explores the relationship between nature and death. Novick's (City of Onkaparinga) current practice uses the process of drawing to generate visual studies that explore the notion of loss and desire. Examining his own internal landscape in an attempt to link his past with the present, the artist explores concepts of faith, belonging, connection, memory, identity, knowing and unknowing, to give expression and shape to deeply personal symbolism and iconography. With long established ties to the coastal location, Novick navigates the landscape between Port Noarlunga and Sellicks Beach to weave an illustrative narrative that reflects on his deep and layered connection with place and the emotion of homecoming.
