The latest additions to the museum are 2 wonderful ship models.
The first, a model of SV L'Avenir has been donated from Augusta Historical Museum in Western Australia. L'Avenir was a large four-masted barque that carried bagged grain from Australian ports in the 1930's
The second model, donated by the sons of the craftsman, is fashioned as a tunny boat, fishing tuna and other seafood in the northern hemisphere, from the 1890's up until the end of WW2. Everything on the model is handcrafted.
If you haven't visited the museum in a while, we welcome you to come and see not only these models but other interesting artefacts and memorabilia that have been added to our collection in the past few months.
School holidays are about to begin. We offer children's questionnaires that can be completed. They cover all aspects of the museum and enhance the visiting experience for all concerned. Ask at the front counter if you would like to complete one and learn more about ASMM.
Cruise Ship season is about to begin with the first ship, Diamond Princess, berthing on Wednesday 2nd October. We look forward to welcoming all visitors to Port Lincoln and to the museum. We are open from 9am to 4.30pm on the days that ships are visiting.

Thanks to monetary support from a benefactor, the Mayor, Diana Mislov, and Deputy Mayor, Jack Ritchie, are headed for Donington, Lincolnshire, UK in order to attend and represent our city at this coming weekend of celebrations surrounding the internment of Matthew Flinders’ bones in Church of St Mary and the Holy Rood.
A grand naval ceremony with hundreds of guests from around the world is planned for the reburial. Flinders’ bones were discovered during work on HS2 in 2019. Following a local campaign, Flinders is now ‘coming home’ to Donington, where he was born. Preparations for his reburial were delayed by the Covid pandemic in 2020 but are now far more impressive than initially planned, organisers have said. Jane Pearson, who started the Matthew Flinders Bring Him Home campaign group, said: ‘We have a very, very grand sending off for Captain Flinders’. There will be three days of commemorations marking the history and life of the celebrated figure on 12, 13 and 14 July. As a naval captain, he will receive an 18-gun salute and will have six pallbearers from the Royal Navy’s state ceremonial team carrying his coffin. There will be other representatives from Australia, and from Mauritius, where the captain was arrested by the French during the Napoleonic war.
Whilst in Donington, and during the celebrations, the Mayor will unveil and present a maquette of Matthew Flinders to the church on behalf of the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum.

• Some will choose to share an economical taxi ride from the foreshore – easy to get and only a 5 minute ride to the Museum.
• The guided Hop On Hop Off bus stops at museums and local tourist spots and will enable guests to view a variety of Port Lincoln highlights, picking up/dropping off approximately every half hour from the C*D centre.
• Some will have booked on a tour such as EP Bus Charters Seafood Story. This tour incorporates a visit to Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, along with other sites.

Visits from MAJESTIC PRINCESS and GRAND PRINCESS
These cruise ships will be visiting Port Lincoln on December 16th and 17th respectively. Axel Stenross Maritime Museum welcomes all visitors to the city. We will be open from 9.00am to 4.30pm both days with the museum's entry fee being discounted to $8 per adult.
Don't miss this opportunity to see one of the best Maritime Museums in Australia. Learn about the windjammers and the Finns who sailed them; the almost lost craft of wooden boat building and the growth of seafood industries here in the last century. You can delight in viewing Axel and Frank’s well-preserved original living quarters and their workshop, with a still operating slipway attached. Admire the display of restored historic vessels, marine artefacts and relics. There are over 30 restored wooden boats of historic significance housed in the Museum or on the hardstand.
Step into the theatrette, sit back, relax and watch the story of Axel and Frank unfold on screen, along with information on the local grain industry and the many facets of the local fishing industry, including Southern blue fin tuna, prawns, rock lobster, abalone, oysters and more.
Wander around the museum and you’ll learn more about the fishing and cargo moving industries which grew around the coastal waters of Port Lincoln, and of the characters who made it happen.
Be immersed in the story of Matthew Flinders RN, captaining HMS Investigator in 1802 and charting the unknown southern coastline of Australia.
Unique interpretive displays throughout the Museum help you on your journey of discovery. Unusual videos and books are for sale. Best ways to get here: short taxi ride, a good walk along the Parnkalla Trail, or the Hop-on Hop-off bus.

• Wander through the living and boat building areas of Axel Stenross and Frank Laakso and be totally immersed in a by-gone era.
• Climb up to ‘The Bridge’ and take a view over the boats on display within the museum. Maybe you might like to don the Captain’s hat and ring the bell loud and clear.
• View the Hecla on display outside the museum and climb the adjoining steps for not only a glimpse of the deck but for the best view of the harbour.
• Enjoy wandering amongst many fine examples of wooden boats and learn of their history.
• Make sure you view the whale jaw bone and vertebrae on display at the entrance of the museum. Also on display is a blubber pot from the whaling era. Learn more of that history when watching the interesting whaling video.
