DATE & WALNUT LOAF 🤍 Margaret River Memories

There was something about the kitchen at Margaret River Guesthouse.

Early mornings.
Guests still sleeping.
The soft hum of the kettle.
And the smell of Date & Walnut Loaf baking in the oven.

This painting is more than a recipe — it’s a memory of that time.

The soaking dates.
The chopped walnuts scattered on the bench.
The well-used loaf tin.
And that first warm slice with melting butter, shared over long conversations and fresh coffee.

Many of the recipes in my Debbie Does Recipes ebooks were baked during those guesthouse years — tested, shared, and enjoyed around a big country table.

Before they became digital pages,
they were moments of welcome.

This piece holds that chapter of our lives —
where baking wasn’t just food,
it was hospitality, connection and heart.

Her Hands Knew

She didn’t measure with scales.
She measured with love.

A wooden bench dusted in flour.
Sunlight catching the bowl.

A recipe card worn thin from years of use.

This painting was inspired by the treasured family recipes shared in my Debbie Does Recipes ebooks — wonderful memories of watching my Nan and mother-in-law bake, filling their kitchens with love and warmth.

Before they were ebooks,
They were moments.

Before they were measurements,
They were memories.

Burnished Bloom explores the quiet beauty found in warmth, age, and transformation. Layers of ochre, copper, and soft blush unfold gently from the centre, inviting the viewer closer, not to observe, but to linger. This work is about presence rather than perfection: a moment held, a bloom past its first flourish yet rich with depth and character.

Painted with flowing, expressive brushwork, the piece celebrates resilience and softness existing side by side. It is intended to bring warmth and calm into a space, a reminder that beauty deepens with time.

Light Play explores the quiet drama of shifting light across sea and sky. Broad, sweeping cloud formations move overhead, layered in deep blues and softened greys, creating a sense of weight and motion above the horizon. Below, the ocean reflects these changing moods, its surface alive with subtle ripples and luminous passages of turquoise and pale blue.

Dark rock formations anchor the composition, guiding the eye across the water and toward the distant glow where sky and sea meet. The contrast between shadow and illumination evokes a moment of transition, where weather, light, and water interact in a fleeting, ever-changing display. This painting invites contemplation, capturing the beauty found in nature’s quiet tension.

Recently, I had the privilege of exhibiting a collection of my poppy works, paintings that are deeply personal and inspired by my time working alongside returned soldiers and the incredible Poppy Ladies.

Each piece is more than just a painting.
It’s a quiet reflection of remembrance, resilience, and the stories that live on through generations.

The poppy, for me, has become a symbol not only of sacrifice, but of connection, between past and present, and within our community.

I’m so grateful for the conversations these works have sparked during the exhibition, and for those who shared their own stories with me. It’s a reminder that art can gently hold space for memory and meaning.
