EASTON SISTERS

May Agnes Dora Easton (1870-1939) and Selina Susannah (Sue) Easton (1872-1954) were well known in the East Fremantle district.
They were the daughters of Walter Easton, who had emigrated to Australia in 1857 as schoolmaster to the convicts in Fremantle Gaol and who became one of the biggest landowners in the East Fremantle area. Easton named the land he owned Windsor, which became the suburb of Richmond- and was divided by his successors in 1901. In 1894vMay Easton married Albert Bulgin, an accountant for WD Moore and Co, Fremantle Building Society and the first auditor for East Fremantle Council. They first lived in ‘Aygera’, Gill St East Fremantle. Selina Easton married Charles F.F. Wearne in 1900.

ALICE MABEL FAULDS

Alice Mabel Faulds was an East Fremantle resident from 1913 until 1956. She had an interesting life with roles as Lady Mayoress of Mount Morgans, bakers wife and mother to nine children. She married Andrew James Ronaldson Faulds in November 1896 in Bendigo. They were pioneers in the WA goldfields- in Goongarrie in 1897 where Andrew was a miner, butcher and baker. Alice apparently relished the early days in WA when they were living in a tent. The family also lived at Menzies, then at Mount Morgans, out past Leonora from 1901-1910. Seven of their 9 children were born and grew up on the goldfields.

MARY FRANCE
Mary Ann ‘Mollie’ France (1869-1929) had a hard childhood in Victoria, and later lost her husband in a freak accident in 1905. Despite this she took on the challenge of bringing up two children and running a busy Grocery shop in the Plympton area.

In 1899, Mollie married Sidney Allan France at Wesley Church in Fremantle. A son Sydney was born in 1900 and a daughter Violet was born in 1902. In 1902 Sidney and his brother Alan, built and opened a grocery shop on the corner of Marmion and King streets. Sidney also worked as an engine driver for the WA Government. Railways. On 14 June 1905, Sidney was killed when he was run over (by his own train) in Perth, he was just 33 years old. Mary bought out Alan’s share and officially took over the running of the shop herself.

5 GILL STREET
Joan Clifford Ward lived at No 5 Gill Street from 1931 - 1954. Joan, described in newspapers as an ‘attractive brunette’ married American serviceman John Bodwell, she met at the start of WWll. He served with the US Army Mine Planter Service and seems to have been a ‘cad’- after he returned to the US in Oct 1945 Joan petitioned for divorce on grounds of ‘desertion’, which was granted in August 1947... but he had already married again- three months before Joan filed for divorce. His next two marriages also ended in divorce due to ‘desertion’.
Joan meanwhile, worked as a stenographer/typist and lived at home with her parents at 5 Gill Street until 1954. She moved to NSW.

JOHN CLEARY FRASER
Fraser Street, East Fremantle was named after John Cleary Fraser (1895- 1956)

Originally from NSW John ‘Jack’ Fraser worked in the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat and with the local fire brigade there before becoming Superintendent of the Yarraville Brigade (Melbourne).He was appointed in August 1892, as one of the first three superintendents of fire brigades in WA, responsible for the Fremantle (and then East Fremantle) Brigade.
During his 8 and a half years as Superintendent of the Fremantle Brigade he designed and built the first hose reels and hose cart, purchased the first horse used in a Brigade and employed the first permanent fireman in WA. In conjunction with Superintendent Cameron, he founded the West Australian Fire Brigade Association at a time when there were only four brigades in the State— in Perth, Fremantle, Geraldton and the Goldfields. Simultaneously with his Fremantle position he was advisory superintendent for the Public Works Department and superintendent of the Railway Department fire brigades, organising all brigades at the different stations.

AIF 1915, Frederick Henry Preston (Regimental number 2691) Labourer, 158 King St, Age at embarkation- 22. Next of kin father Frederick Preston, Unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A23 Suffolk on 13 October 1916.

1917 “Mr. and Mrs. F. Preston, of 158 King-street, East Fremantle, have received word that their son, Private F. H. Preston (Mick) is in the Bethnal Green Hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds in the legs. Private Preston saw service at Gallipoli.” (War Casualties, The West Australian 23 August 1917, p5)

PERCY E FLINT
Percy Edwin Flint (1881-1934) and his family lived at 69 Irwin Street, East Fremantle.

“Passing of a popular Portonian - The death last Wednesday of Mr. Percy Edwin Flint, District Registrar at Fremantle, is deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends, to whom his demise came as a shock, even though it was known that he had for some time been in poor health… The late Mr. Flint, who was 53 years of age, came to this State from NSW at an early age, and was employed as a clerk for a number of years by Holmes Bros., wholesale and retail butchers at the Port. At the outbreak of the war, he was located at Moora, and enlisted with the 10th Light Horse. Transferring later to the 4th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column, he was on active service for practically the whole period of the war, serving with distinction, and returned to Western Australia very badly gassed.For three years after the demobilisation, he was employed as a farm manager, which position he relinquished to enter the service of Mr James Stevens, a Fremantle land and estate agent. About two years ago he was appointed to the position which he held at the time of his death.”

41 DALGETY STREET
No 41 Dalgety Street is a single storey shop and attached house with a corner entrance.

“The Late Mr. Bernard McCloskey, died at his residence, 41 Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, on Tuesday last… Mr. McCloskey. who was born at Claudy, Co. Derry, Ireland in 1864, came to Australia when 21 years of age… On arriving in this State he settled in Fremantle and had resided there for the past 42 years.

He entered the service of the Gaols Department in 1895 and rose to the rank of principal warder, from which he retired after 26 years' service. He then took an extended trip to his homeland and on his return commenced business on his own account as a grocer in Dalgety-street, East Fremantle.

Mr. McCloskey was of genial and charitable disposition, and his quiet and unobtrusive support of many worthy causes afforded him a great deal of satisfaction, and he will be sadly missed. He leaves a wife, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren to mourn their loss.” (The West Australian, 27 May 1938, p15)
