Volcanoes Discovery Centre How are volcanoes formed? What rocks come from volcanoes? What do volcanoes leave behind? How does lava flow? The centre interests tourists as well as students.

Volcanoes are fascinating, although we don't have any active volcanoes in Australia, they do have an impact on the landscape today. Most people know little about Australian volcanoes but a visit to the Penshurst Volcanoes Discovery Centre has people leaving with a lot more knowledge. Australia's only active volcano is on Heard Island way off in the Southern Ocean but we do have one of the largest volcanic plains in the world in Western Victoria. The Volcanoes Discovery Centre has displays of all types of volcanoes, and specific information on volcanic activity in Western Victoria. Through rock samples, videos and posters the wonder of volcanoes is on show for everyone. Many schools make a special trip to Penshurst to learn about geology. A visit to Penshurst should also include a climb of Mount Rouse, our very own extinct volcano. The Volcanoes Discovery Centre is open Thursday, Frday 11am - 3pm, Saturday, Sunday, 10am - 4pm plus Public Holidays and School Holidays, generally 11am - 3pm. Group visits can be arranged at any time by contacting the Centre. http://www.volcanoesdiscoverycentre.com.au

A lucky break has these sulfur crystals ready for their close-up. 📸

After NASA’s Curiosity rover accidentally crushed a rock while driving across Mars, scientists found something never before seen on the Red Planet: sulfur crystals.

This close-up image, taken with Curiosity’s robotic arm camera, reveals the tiny crystals in remarkable detail.
Research recently published in Science suggests the sulfur formed about 3 billion years ago when magma beneath the Martian surface released fluids or gases that left sulfur deposits behind. Every new discovery like this helps scientists piece together Mars’ ancient history.
