Have you ever wondered how firefighters adapted in the advent of electricity? Once the installation of underground electrical sub-stations, firefighters were faced with the question of how to safely fight electrical fires when the use of water was out of the question.

The answer to this question, and many more related to the evolution of the fire engine, are covered in our exhibition, Illustrating Change.

We also have a blog on the history of the CO2 tender, introduced at a time when specialisation was becoming increasingly important. Check out the blog on our website at 🔗 https://www.museumoffire.net/single-post/something-old-something-new-10-years-later-looking-back-on-the-co2-tender

It's time for another , and today we are going back to 1984 Riverstone with this photograph featured as the May photograph in our 2026 Historic Firefighting Calendar!

1984 marked a century of Fire Brigade in New South Wales and saw a number of celebrations throughout the state! Here we have Riverstone Fire Station all decked out in celebration with the 1929 Ahrens Fox!

It's time for the answer to yesterday's !

If you guessed our bike display, you would be correct! 🚲

Bicycles were an official mode of transport used by brigades all across the state for running messages, checking street alarms, and undertaking water hydrant inspections. They could even be used to carry standpipes!

Bicycles were gradually removed from service in the mid-50s in line with the removal of street alarm boxes.

New to our collection 🚒

Last week we got a very special delivery from our friends at the Fire Brigade Historical Society of the ACT - a Volvo F86 to add to our collection!

These trucks were unique to Canberra as they were the first in the series of the colour changes from the ubiquitous 'Fire Engine Red' to the distinct ACT Yellow you still see today in Canberra.
