Connecting Threads is a solo exhibition by Barkindji artist Carmel Mackie which brings together the diverse elements of Carmel Mackie’s evolving practice, with a focus on the expressive possibilities of thread.
Her work honours the environment, the creatures we share with it and invites viewers to contemplate our shared experiences to nature. She draws inspiration from natural forms such as textures, patterns, and the structures found in plants and animals. Materials like fabric, paper, tea bags, and skeleton leaves are carefully integrated into her pieces, creating layered and tactile compositions.
Free motion embroidery plays a central role in her process, adding movement and depth to each work. Using thread, Carmel Mackie also pays homage to the women in her family and the generations of mothers who crafted out of necessity. Her art is grounded in care, memory, and a deep respect for the natural and cultural world.
This exhibition is the outcome of Carmel Mackie receiving the Liverpool Powerhouse Aboriginal Scholarship Award in 2024 at the 32nd Annual Mil-Pra AECG Art Exhibition & Prizes. The Liverpool Powerhouse Aboriginal Scholarship Award is proudly sponsored by Dharug Strategic Management Group, David Harding & Nabila Ansari and supported by Liverpool Powerhouse as part of the Annual Mil-Pra AECG Art Exhibition and Prizes. The winning artist receives funds to go towards an exhibition at Liverpool Powerhouse along with support from curatorial staff. Mentorship by a First Nations artist and/or curator is also available. Artist Belinda Fox mentored Carmel Mackie for this exhibition. The Scholarship winner’s exhibition launches the same day as the annual Mil-Pra AECG awards ceremony and launch.
