The Meaning of Ochre in Limilngan & Wulna Culture
Respecting the Colours. Honouring the Stories.

Ochre is more than just colour —
It is spirit, story, and connection to Country.

Each ochre shade has a deep cultural meaning and purpose. In Limilngan and Wulna tradition, these colours are placed with intention — there is a right way to use them, and each use carries knowledge.

White – Spirits, Ancestors, Dreaming Stories
Represents the spiritual realm: ghosts, bones, and the stories of the Dreaming. White is used to connect with spirit and ceremony.

Black – The People
Used for background painting and as a filler. Black is never worn on the skin by Limilngan and Wulna people — it is for the canvas, not the body.

Red – Mother Earth & Sacred Knowledge
Symbolises the land, blood, and deep connection to Country. In art, red highlights important features and can mark parts of animals to avoid when preparing food.

Yellow – New Life, Fat, and Abundance
A sign of “newness” and richness. Yellow shows fat indicators in animals and seasonal abundance. It’s widely used on both skin and artwork to celebrate health, growth, and change.

🪵 How We Paint
Traditionally, ochre is mixed with natural adhesives like milkwood sap or beeswax — helping bind the pigment to artefacts and withstand the heat. This technique ensures the story stays with the object.

When you see ochre, you are looking at generations of knowledge — layered in meaning, place, and spirit.
Respect the ochre. Respect the story.

Limilngan-Wulna Seasonal Bush Calendar 🌿🌀
Our Country doesn't follow four seasons — it moves through natural cycles shaped by plants, animals, water, and skies.

This seasonal calendar reflects the rhythms of Limilngan and Wulna Country, where each time of year brings signs and stories:

🐢 Turtle and Barramundi seasons
🪰 Dragonflies tell us when to fish
🦅 White cockatoos signal the berries and plums are ready
💨 Anyalak — the windy season between April and May
🌧️ Anyan — wet season, known for strong winds and late storms
🌟 Cold seasons bring colourful stars

“This is a difficult season… can’t do anything.” — Graham Kenyon
These teachings help guide us — they carry knowledge, safety, and deep connection to Country.

Learn from the land. Respect its patterns. Listen to our Elders.

Culcul – Welcome to Country 🌿💧
In Limilngan and Wulna culture, we welcome visitors with Culcul — a sacred act of placing water on the head to invite spiritual safety and respect on Country.

This isn’t just a custom — it’s a cultural protection that connects land, people, and spirit.
It’s done once per visit to help prevent bad luck, sadness, or sickness when travelling through unfamiliar Country.

⚠️ Culcul won’t protect you from mozzies or crocs 😅🐊 — but it will offer you the spiritual safety of being truly welcomed.
Whether done with water, smoke, or sweat, Culcul is deeply respected and often expected by Aboriginal people across the NT. It’s more than a gesture — it’s a grounding, powerful connection.

Respect the Country. Respect the Culture. Welcome with Culcul.

🌿🎨 Litchfield Art Expo 2024! 🎨🌿

Every year, Litchfield Council and Darwin Community Arts bring together an incredible showcase of rural creativity at the Litchfield Art Expo—and this year marks the 7th year of this amazing event!

From stunning photography, paintings, and ceramics to beautifully crafted rural arts, this expo highlights the incredible talent of our local community. A huge shoutout to the dedicated team and hosts who make this event possible!

I had the absolute pleasure of performing Welcome to Country on behalf of my Wulna People for another year, acknowledging the land and our connection to it. It was also a proud moment to see other Wulna artists exhibiting their incredible works.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, make sure to visit and support our local artists—and don’t miss out next year in 2026! 🎭✨

Last Week, Qalmolmi Arts & Wunun Consultancy & Business Solutions had the honour of joining forces to deliver a Welcome To Country on Kungarakan & Warrai Lands in Batchelor as part of the NT Savanna Fire Management Program Forum 2024🔥 It was a powerful ceremony, celebrating our deep connection to country and the share responsibility of caring for it. 🌱🌿

Later on in the afternoon, Qalmolmi Arts hosted a special team-building painting session, where participants added their unique artistic touch to two collaborative boards, each piece a meaningful contribution to the artwork. 🎨

A heartfelt thank you to the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation for having Qalmolmi Arts back this year for the painting session. We are grateful for your support and commitment to uplifting indigenous arts and cultural engagement. 🌿
