JACQUELINE PURUNTATAMERI | MUNUPI ARTS | OPENING 6TH JUNE

Painting from her Mother’s Country, Jurrupi (Jessie River), and Father’s Country, Rangini, Jacqueline Puruntatameri continues a family tradition of Tiwi painting that spans generations.

Raised in Pirlangimpi on Melville Island, Jacqueline has painted with Munupi Arts for many years, drawing upon the ceremonial design traditions of Jilamara and Kulama. Her intricate surfaces are built through repeated marks and rhythmic patterning, transforming the visual language of ceremony into compositions that feel at once deeply rooted and distinctly personal.

Jacqueline follows in the footsteps of her grandfather, the renowned Tiwi artist Black Joe, whose legacy continues to inform her connection to painting, Country and cultural knowledge.

Works by Jacqueline Puruntatameri are now on view as part of ‘Ngini Ngarwulla Kirrijipuni – Our Clay: Natural Ochres for Painting and Story’, a group exhibition of artists from Munupi Arts.

MARLENE GILSON OAM | FIRST PEOPLES MELBOURNE ART TRAMS 2026

We would like to warmly congratulate Wadawurrung Elder and senior artist Marlene Gilson OAM on her inclusion in the 2026 First Peoples Melbourne Art Trams, launched this week as part of RISING Melbourne.

Selected as the 2026 Legacy Tram artist, Gilson’s work ‘Happy Families – time when we all lived together’, 2022 now moves through the streets of Melbourne as part of one of the city’s most visible public art initiatives.

Centred on stories connected to Wadawurrung Country, Gilson’s richly detailed paintings reclaim and reframe historical narratives through scenes of cultural continuity, community and connection to Country. Her work often features her two totems - Bunjil the Eagle and Waa the Crow - carrying ancestral knowledge, memory and storytelling across generations.

Presented as part of RISING and curated by Taungurung woman Kate ten Buuren, the 2026 edition of First Peoples Melbourne Art Trams celebrates the power of Blak imagination through six newly commissioned tram works by First Peoples artists from across Victoria.

Congratulations Aunty Marlene on this remarkable and richly deserved recognition.

SAM MICHELLE | FEATURED IN COUNTRY STYLE MAGAZINE

We would like to congratulate our artist Sam Michelle on her beautiful feature in the latest issue of Country Style Magazine.

Spanning six pages, the feature offers a glimpse into Michelle’s coastal Victorian studio and garden practice, tracing the relationship between the flowers she grows and the lush still life paintings she creates from them. Working directly from life, Michelle builds her compositions through carefully observed arrangements of seasonal blooms, balancing colour, movement and atmosphere with remarkable sensitivity.

As the article notes, Michelle treats her garden “like an art collection” - cultivating dahlias, hydrangeas, hollyhocks and scabiosa not only for their beauty, but for the emotional and painterly possibilities they hold within the studio.

“Every morning, I’d spend an hour in the garden without my phone, just being focused… It fills my cup, and I can use that in the studio.”

Congratulations Sam on this wonderful and well deserved feature.

FORTHCOMING EXHIBITION | MUNUPI ARTS | TIWI ISLANDS

Martin Browne Contemporary is pleased to present ‘Ngini Ngarwulla Kirrijipuni - Our Clay: Natural Ochres for Painting and Story’ - an upcoming exhibition of contemporary Tiwi painting from artists of Munupi Arts, Pirlangimpi.

Working predominantly with natural ochres, the artists translate inherited cultural knowledge, rhythm, hunting traditions and ceremonial marking-making through distinct and deeply personal approaches to painting.

Opening 6 June at Martin Browne Contemporary.

MICHAEL VALE & ALEXANDER McKENZIE | SALON DES REFUSÉS 2026

We are pleased to share that works by Michael Vale and Alexander McKenzie have been selected for the 2026 Salon des Refusés at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney.

Established in 1992, Salon des Refusés presents a curated exhibition drawn from works entered into the Archibald and Wynne Prizes, offering an expanded view of some of the most distinctive approaches to contemporary portraiture and landscape painting in Australia.

Michael Vale’s ‘Self portrait (with friends)’, 2026 unfolds through one of the artist’s characteristically strange and psychologically charged landscapes, where humour, symbolism and unease collide through his distinctly Gothic visual language.

In contrast, Alexander McKenzie’s ‘Susi Muddiman at Ngununggula’, 2026 approaches portraiture through stillness and atmosphere, placing the respected curator within one of his luminous and symbolically charged landscapes.

Now showing at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney.

MARION BAKER | TJUKULA ILKIRA ILKIRA

Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra artist Marion Baker paints ‘Tjukula Ilkira Ilkira’ - interconnected rock holes that sustain life across Country during the dry season. Passed down through generations, knowledge of these water sites carries deep cultural significance for Aṉangu, with Baker learning to locate rock holes from her grandmothers as a child.

Working between vivid oranges, deep violets and flowing white forms, Baker maps these interconnected systems through bold rhythmic mark-making and expansive movement across the canvas. Repeated circular forms and branching pathways suggest the movement of water between rock holes, carrying ideas of continuity, memory and connection to Country.

Now based in Port Augusta, Baker continues to develop her practice through the Port Augusta Aboriginal Arts Mob (PAAAM), sharing stories of Country and culture through painting for future generations.
