The old Halfmoon Biosciences team joined Parks and Wildlife on our island wide surveys for seabirds. Great support from Parks allowing us to cover 1000s of data points across 50 odd islands. This time North Island and the Wallabi Group. Highlights were the numerous White-faced storm petrel and Little shearwater rookeries as well as locating Great Knots and Curlew Sanpipers. Seabirds are true ocean sentinels. This bird (12509-foreground) I banded as a breeding adult in 1993, making her over 34 years old and still breeding. In that time she would have flown over 350,000 kms just when raising her young at Pelsaert. Latest tracking data from Houtman Abrolhos. Three seabird species tracked over 5 days mid November. This shows the scale that the birds cover and the significance of this research. Remember, this is self funded, and you can support this work continuing by going to the website and buying books or t shirts.

I am very happy to be launching this crowdsource project. After 18 years, the old Honda outboard engine has given up. Operating for 4 months of the year at a remote group of islands requires a reliable and safe method of propulsion to get myself and my volunteers from the base camp to Pelsaert Island, 12 km across the shallow reef systems of the Houtman Abrolhos. This year however I have been unsuccessful in raising any grant funds from our usual sources, so it's time to head back to our friendly supporters. It has also given me an opportunity to revamp the T shirts, print some bumper stickers and of course plug the book! There are rewards for all contributors. It would be fantastic if you could share this on your page and spread the word. While we hope to hit the target ($7200, half the cost of a new engine!), it would be even better to smash it! We don't receive any of the funds unless we reach the target, but we have no upside limit after that baseline is reached. Thanks for sharing!

It's Released! We picked up the new edition of Houtman Abrolhos A Natural History from Scott Print this afternoon, already available at the Shipwreck Gallery, Chart and Map Shop, Geraldton Museum and Latitude Jewellers. Pretty sweet to finally get it in the hand.
