By 1944, the Nungarin camp was braced for invasion. More than 100 tanks and around 2,000 troops were stationed here, hidden under camouflage in the Vehicle Park.

Even today, the gravel roads and square pads remain in the bush, a striking reminder of how ready Australia was to defend itself.

Nungarin’s workshops were built for heavy wartime work. Alongside carpentry and artillery sheds was the Tank Hull Workshop, the only all-steel building on site. It housed a 30-tonne gantry crane capable of lifting a General Grant tank off a railway wagon and moving it indoors.

The Harvest Festival Weekend kicked off last night with the Community Welcome BBQ at the Nungarin Recreation Ground.

Thank you to the local volunteers and Curtin students who helped with prepping salads, setting up tables and of course the clean up.

Thank you also to everyone who bought along a salad or sweet (or both 💕)

In early 1942, construction began on Nungarin’s supply depot. The project took 18 months, roughly cost over £10 million and covered around 620 acres.

It is one of WA’s largest inland military facilities, making it a vital site for Australia’s wartime planning.

The Harvest Festival Weekend kicks off on 2nd October with the Community Welcome BBQ. We would love for you to join us at the Nungarin Recreation Centre from 6:00 PM to meet the locals, kick off the weekend, and enjoy some genuine country hospitality.

During WWII, a supply depot was needed inland out of reach of carrier-based aircraft, but accessible enough to move supplies by rail and road.

Nungarin’s location in the Wheatbelt made it the ideal choice. This decision placed our town at the heart of Australia’s defence strategy.

The Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum first opened in 1994 with just a third of the building. Over time the collection grew, and with Royalties for Regions support, a new depot was added along Danberrin Road. Today, the museum preserves an extraordinary range of machinery and artefacts, each with a story to tell about WA’s wartime past.
