In the name of God, the Womb, 2026
Textile and brass

In Arabic, ‘Bisah Ar Rahman Ar Rahim’ commonly translates to ‘In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful’.

The names of Allah SWT, Rahman and Rahim, come from the arabic root R-H-M, which also forms rahim meaning the Womb.

Contemplating on my mother’s acts of care and inherited knowledge this textile piece weaves together two forms of healing - Kerokan (coin rubbing) and Istigfar (seeking forgiveness)

May 31st Eid Open House: Halal Bi Halal 💟🪑

12-4pm

An Eid al Adha Gathering for Families.

‘Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is in being together.’

~Prophet Muhammed

Celebrate the blessed days of Eid al Adha with a classic Indonesian-style barbecue. Halal Bi Halal is an Indonesian tradition where families come together to foster the Islamic tradition of silaturahmi - showing mercy and asking for forgiveness from one another. Join us for makan bersama (eating together), nostalgic games for the kids and space to reflect on our intentions.

Featuring a very special sensory crafts table by Astrid Jayengsari of PaperPlayground exploring themes of nurturance, lineage & memory centred around her maternal grandmother Opung Emak. Astrid will also prepare DIY ketupat Eid greeting cards for the kids.

Please note: in accordance with our Islamic customs, men are encouraged to use the front courtyard as their gathering space while the main gallery will be reserved for women and children. Men may use the prayer space in the main gallery and walk through to access the amenities.

Speakers wrapped in handwoven lace sit alongside a lightbox bearing (The Healer), softening technology through gestures of domestic care. The soundscape of children’s voices, birds, and salawat from my nephew’s aqiqah moves between play and prayer, forming the rhythm of home life.

Come down to the Meja Kita show and spend time with Nur Aishah Kenton’s work ‘Rindu (to yearn, to long for)’

From the series Orchard, 2005
Printed images on cotton, traditional Malaysian batik fabric

There is a room on the ground floor of my home in Kuala Lumpur where my mother Shuhana prays, it is also where she keeps her art supplies, as well as being the place where she often rests during the day. Once a skilful artist, my mother hasn’t picked up a paint brush for many years. These days, instead of painting orchids, she prefers to display them and grow them in her garden.

……

The act of photographing with Shuhana permits us, even for a short time, to acknowledge and celebrate the inseparable bond of being mother and daughter. Simultaneously, photography allows us to forge new ground in our relationship as individuals, at the centre of which is a deep empathy and love for each other.

Between Tongues closes tomorrow and Pari is open this weekend!

Come by and hold one of Lou Garcia-Dolnik & Panda Wong’s light-up crystal hearts before the show closes.

blurred outline, permanent imprint, 2025
Laser engraved crystals, LED lights, white stock hi-tac vinyl decals
15 x 20 x 5 cm each

For Between Tongues, we have created a work that plays with the idea of poetry as 3-
dimensional through ‘crystal poems’, decals and light. We sifted through our previous works, pulling lines that shared an attention to language. We discovered that these lines also spoke to transience and temporariness, often tending to reference the things we hold most dear.

Decals float in the window, lines of poetry filtering out the light to fall onto the gallery floor as distorted echoes of themselves. The changing glow of LED lights illuminate the fragments.

We were moved by paperweights and their traditional function of holding things down,
trapping that which wants to flee. We also wanted to explore the poetic potential in the
paperweight as a merchandise object or corporate anachronism. Take a closer look at the

crystals to see the poems they compose in each new arrangement.

Thank you to Lucy Fan at Pujiang Crystal Factory for crystallising our poems

cu-vu-n-ta-r, 2026
Glazed, engraved, hand painted and screen printed ceramic slabs
Dimensions variable

Cu-vu-n-dar comprises a series of ceramic tablets. Words and images are overlayed on the clay. Some are clearly defined, while other inscriptions are barely visible. Marks are made via engraving, glazing, printing and painting. These palimpsests have been used in my attempts to translate the Govender surname into Tamil.

There are 1.5 million persons of South Asian origin residing in South Africa, commonly referred to as South African Indians. A large portion identify as Tamil, and amongst South African Tamils one of the most popular surnames is “Govender”. However, this name cannot be written in Tamil script as it was a name given to various South Asian indentured labourers arriving in Durban in the late 1800’s. Many were illiterate or at least could not write in English. The Govender surname can thus be seen as the result of misspelling, and/or anglicizing, or even complete fabrication depending on who you speak with.

Even though there are 247 characters in the Tamil abugida script, no combination of these characters can accurately write the name Govender. This artwork acts as an attempt at connecting with a source culture, the mother tongue, ancestral homeland, etc. all the while knowing that these attempts are futile.

Made of muddled layers of patterns learnt, misconstrued and understood
Through lines said, left unsaid and read between
Of different mothers, mother-tongues
– equal parts familiar and dissonant

Patterns carved into being
Perfect valleys to bear blame
To let nestle – to accommodate
always
to bear ‘till overflow
