It’s hard to find the words, but I feel I need to write this post. 😥

I want to pay homage to a great mentor, teacher, encourager and friend.

Dare I say, if it weren’t for the influence of Paul Roe there may never have been a Back O Bourke Gallery.

Paul had an exuberant zest for life, a genuine love for people, an endearing sense of humour and wonderfully quick wit. He was a visionary, a man of deep faith, knowledge and wisdom, yet always humble and kind. His passion for the outback and Australian history, together with his gift for storytelling, made him a truly remarkable person.

Most of all, Paul was a wonderful example of what it means to be a follower and friend of Jesus.

Sadly, Paul passed away yesterday.

We are forever grateful for his friendship, encouragement and the profound influence he had on our lives. His belief in us and his encouragement along the way will always be part of the Back O Bourke Gallery story.

Just two months ago, I had the privilege of being interviewed by Paul in his role as The Outback Historian. We talked about 20 years of Back O Bourke Gallery, my journey as an artist, and the inspiration behind my art. I’m so grateful that we have this special conversation to look back on.

RIP, dear friend. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. 💙🕊✝️

Help this great cause if you can.💙🇦🇺🏊

Today I was delighted to donate an artwork to Scott Gladman. He is swimming the full length of the Darling River, becoming the first person ever to attempt the entire distance.

He’s doing it for his mates, and for every regional family touched by Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Parkinson’s.

Every dollar raised in his campaign Fight The Current goes directly toward MND and Parkinson's research and support for families facing rapid changes in care and independence.

"The Darling's Journey" shows a section of the river Scott will be swimming, but it also has a deeper meaning and encouragement about meeting life's challenges. It seemed like the perfect donation. 😊🖼

Wide Brown Land is the final artwork in my Sunburnt Country series, inspired by Dorothea Mackellar’s “My Country”. Interestingly, it has been the most popular seller in the series. 😊

In Wide Brown Land, I wanted to capture the softer, more muted side of the outback. The scene, inspired by a drive across the grey floodplain between Bourke and Brewarrina, captures a weathered fence line, scattered coolibah trees and the openness stretching away into the distance. The deep red/pink bushes provide a perfect point of interest that enhance the artwork.

There is a quiet beauty in this wide, open country, even when the landscape is dry, brown and grey. No wonder Aussies agree with Dorothea Mackellar when she claims " A wide brown land for me!"🤎🇦🇺🩶

Outback storms are something to experience. For some they are beautiful, for others they are terrifying! Hence Beauty and Terror is the 8th artwork in my Sunburnt Country series.

I vividly remember the experience that lead to the creation of Beauty and Terror. My parents were visiting and a storm was brewing. The dramatic contrast of dark clouds and sunlit tree tops beckoned us down a rich red dirt track. The scene was stunningly beautiful. 🙌🏼🩶🧡

Suddenly the wind rushed through the trees and lightning flashed to the east. We hastily retreated, slipping through red mud as rain and hail drenched us before we got home. 🌬⛈️⚡️

The landscape can be beautiful one moment and intimidating the next. Beauty and Terror captures that moment.

Seeing the outback transformed by water is quite an awesome and remarkable sight. The country gradually takes on a completely different scene. 💙

In Inland Sea, I wanted to capture that beautiful stillness during a flood, when the Darling River breaks its banks and stretches across the landscape, in this case, almost to Mt Oxley. The scene feels peaceful, abundant and full of promise. 🕊🌿

Inland Sea is a part of my 3rd series, Sunburnt Country and another great memory of the 20 year journey of Back O Bourke Gallery.

In Far Horizons, I wanted to capture that wonderful sense of distance. The red earth in the foreground, the scattered trees below, and the vast landscape disappearing beneath a wide blue sky. ☁️💙

There is something very peaceful about looking out across the country like this. It reminds me just how expansive the Bourke landscape, and indeed the Australian landscape is.

Far Horizons is part of my Sunburnt Country series, inspired by Dorothea Mackellar’s “My Country”. This artwork conveys that unmistakable feeling of looking beyond the near country and out towards the far horizon.

These two paintings really belong together for me, because they show just how dramatically our Outback country can change.

In Drought, the land is dry, dusty and stripped back. The fence line disappears into the distance and everything sits quietly beneath the heat, waiting for a change. There is no sign of life when the land suffers through drought. ☀️

Then in Flooding Rains, that same country is completely transformed. Water spreads across the landscape, grasses return, birds gather, and suddenly there is life and movement everywhere. 🌿🌨

That contrast is such a familiar part of living in the bush. We see the country at its harshest, and then we see it come alive again.

Drought and Flooding Rains are a part of my Sunburnt Country series, inspired by Dorothea Mackellar’s “My Country”. These two artworks reflect the extremes and resilience of our landscape.

We only have two mountains in Bourke. I have always loved the ruggedness of Mt Oxley and the way it rises out of the surrounding flat country.

In Ragged Mountain Ranges, I wanted to capture the beautiful textures and colours in the rocks, along with the twisted trees that continue to grow in such a harsh landscape. There is something very special about the contrast between those weathered rock faces and the wide open country beyond.

Standing on Mt Oxley is an amazing experience because it is incredible to be at a vantage point where you can see the vastness of the western plains spread before you like an ocean to a distant horizon. The landscape feels strong and ancient.

Ragged Mountain Ranges is a part of my Sunburnt Country series, inspired by Dorothea Mackellar’s “My Country”. This artwork is my way of representing the raw beauty and character of our landscape.
