Just completed, 'Flotilla' Australian Pelicans 142 x 78 cm oil on canvas.
A calm winter's morning on the Surry River, four beautiful pelicans go about their specialized feeding technique of herding fish before filtering out the water and debris. Apart from the obvious elegance of these birds, my interest was purely to capture the nature of light transparency, absorption and reflectivity as it scatters throughout the painting.

It’s been a little while between posts but finally have some work to show for it.
Seabird enthusiasts usually have their favourite albatross and this species would probably be it.
The elegant Grey-headed Albatross is an uncommon visitor to Australia’s southern coast from its subantarctic breeding islands. This beautiful adult was observed off Port MacDonnell earlier this year.

For those still craving our Vanilla Slice, they are available this Saturday and Sunday 10 till 4 pm at the Bay of Whales Gallery on a takeaway basis.

Meanwhile, the gallery has an outstanding collection of original wildlife paintings and prints to admire as well as the gardens and coastal viewing area.

I often try to paint my bird subjects life-size, so when it came to a commissioned painting of a female (front bird) and male Wedge-tailed Eagle, the canvas board presented its own physical challenges on the easel at 144 x 125 cm.

This painting will be leaving for its new home on Monday so if you are visiting the southwest, it will only be on display at the Bay of Whales Gallery this weekend.

The gallery is open today from 10 till 4 for those who enjoy fine art.
After the gallery comes a cracking view of the coastline from Port Fairy to the east and beyond Portland to the west, and then a relaxing garden and lawns to wander.
