We believe Murray Bridge Council Administration is removing most of the railway carriages from the wharf area without any consultation with the community or the advisory committee for the area or the elected members of Council.
The Murray Bridge Riverboat ,Rail & Steam Group Inc became aware of this potential move from other sources last week and the elected members were eventually notified last Friday afternoon.
The move is being explained to facilitate bituminizing the area where some of the carriages are displayed and will cost the ratepayers we calculate around $10,000 out thats if they are to return them the same.
Unnecessary when the railway track they are on has been left usable by consultation and planning by previous council/community agreement to allow the movement of the freight cars if required, this comes at no or minimal costs to the ratepayers.
We believe this action by council other than being a total waste of ratepayer money is also a MAJOR DISCONNECT between council and the ownership of the site by the ratepayers/community who have been a major driver of design and display in the area since the largest public meeting in Murray Bridges History in 1995.
This is a huge INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE site and is State Heritage listed.
If you believe the freight cars (train carriages) can provide correct interpretation and continue to add interest to our historical precinct and like us would like to see them repurposed and utilised to add appeal to the area instead of probably a heap more flower beds then please contact any of the elected members listed below and let them know your support for leaving them where they are and useing some money to neaten them up.
