THE WORLD OF MONOPRINTING —
A SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT OLD STABLES

We’d love to invite our community to come and experience The Big Book Exhibition at Old Stables Pottery & Gallery, opening Saturday 5 September at 4pm.

This is a wonderful exhibition to bring the family to — and especially a great experience for children and teenagers. The work is vibrant, playful and full of imagination, offering a beautiful introduction to the world of printmaking and creative expression.

The exhibition celebrates the tcreative work with the amazing team and community in the Wheatbelt around Carnamah, led by artist Geronazzo.

And there’s more…

On the same day, Francesco will be sharing the process behind the project in a special Monoprinting Workshop from 1–3pm.

Monoprinting is an exciting, hands-on form of printmaking where every print is unique. It’s about experimenting with marks, textures, layers and colour — and seeing what happens when you give yourself permission to play.

There are only 8 places available, so if you or your teenager would like to have a go, we recommend booking early.

A little place for making, learning and connecting 🏺

Tucked away in Mullalyup, Old Stables Pottery & Gallery is more than just a pottery studio.

It’s a working space where clay is shaped, glazes are tested, kilns are fired, artists share their skills and people come together to make something with their hands.

Some days you’ll find us quietly working in the studio.
Other days the place is full of people learning something new, experimenting with clay or sharing a laugh around the table.

We’re building Old Stables as a place where craft, creativity and community meet — and we’d love for more of our local community to discover it.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of what happens behind the doors, introducing the artists and makers who are part of our story, and letting you see what we’re working on.

There’s something truly beautiful about creating ceramics with a particular person in mind.

Gary customised this dinner set for a very dear client — a collection of hand-crafted pieces, each carrying the same quiet rhythm of pattern, colour and texture.

The soft titanium glaze paired with the deep blue, hand-drawn circular design gives the set a sense of harmony, while each piece remains wonderfully individual.

Made slowly, thoughtfully and by hand — because the things we use every day can also hold a little story. 🤍

A DAY OF RAKU AT OLD STABLES

What a lovely day it was at Old Stables Pottery.

A brand-new Raku kiln, beautifully made by , glowing with possibility and ready for its first firing.

Amazing glazes, flames, smoke, glowing pots and those wonderfully unpredictable Raku moments — each piece revealing itself in its own way.

But more than anything, it was the people who made the day special.

A cosy little group gathered around the fire, sharing stories, watching the flames, helping each other and simply enjoying the magic of making.

There is something very special about Raku.

It is not about perfection.
It is about being present, embracing the unexpected and letting the fire become part of the process.

For more than 50 years, Gary Hambleton has been exploring one of ceramics’ greatest mysteries—the magic of glaze.

Every beautiful rutile blue, rich copper red and textured surface tells a story of curiosity, experimentation and countless hours beside the kiln. Glazes aren’t simply recipes to Gary; they’re a lifelong journey of discovery.

This October, Gary is opening the studio doors once again to share the knowledge he’s spent decades refining.

Over five inspiring days, you’ll learn the foundations of glaze development, mix and test your own glazes, explore line blends and triaxial blends, and gain a deeper understanding of reduction firing through two live kiln firings.

Joining Gary is ceramic artist and industrial designer Japneet Keith, bringing contemporary ceramic practice together with Gary’s wealth of traditional knowledge to create a workshop that’s both practical and inspiring.

Whether you’re just beginning your clay journey or you’ve been making for years, this workshop is an opportunity to slow down, ask questions, experiment, and build confidence in your own glaze practice.

Some places quietly become part of your life.

For me, Café Squisto in Bridgetown is one of them.

I love their unwavering commitment to coffee. Not coffee that’s rushed or simply consumed, but coffee that’s meant to be savoured. Every cup feels like an invitation to slow down.

Their food carries that same philosophy. Every fresh dish feels thoughtfully considered, as though someone has asked, “What is the very best we can share today?”

And then there’s the soup.

A generous, fragrant bowl with fresh bread—exactly as soup should be. Warming you from within, nourishing rather than simply filling you. Add the comforting sounds of the kitchen, the welcoming café, and the peaceful verandah, and you have a place that feels wonderfully human.

Today marks something special for us.

A small collection of our pottery has found its place at Café Squisto.

To the locals, visitors, travellers and wanderers who might pick up one of our mugs or bowls, I hope it brings a little more presence to your day. A quieter morning coffee. A slower lunch. A moment of bliss. 🪷

Every piece has travelled its own journey—shaped by compassionate hands, dried with patience, and transformed through the fierce embrace of a 1320°C kiln. It is a journey of earth, fire and care.
