The next chapter of our glaze development journey — from firing to discovery! Day 2 and Day 3

After days of learning, observing and selecting 10 new glazes from our range of 30, we began a series of experiments, exploring possibilities, variations and the beautiful surprises that ceramics so often bring.

Each test is a step towards understanding how materials, minerals, oxides and firing come together to create colour, depth and surface.

Five wonderful days of curiosity, experimentation, learning and creative discovery at Old Stables Pottery & Gallery. We had the absolute pleasure of facilitating this glaze development workshop with an inspiring bunch of creatives, exploring glaze chemistry, testing materials, discovering colour possibilities and sharing the joy of working with clay.

Here’s a little glimpse into the amazing five days we shared. I’ll be sharing more photographs over the coming days, celebrating the beautiful moments, discoveries and connections that made this workshop so special. 🤍🏺

We start with our glaze development workshop tomorrow.

Over the coming days, we’ll look beyond simply following recipes and begin to understand how glazes behave — how materials interact, how small changes can create different results, and how testing can lead to unexpected discoveries.

Our aim is not to find a single “perfect” glaze, but to give you the confidence and knowledge to develop your own. Through testing, observation and a little curiosity, we hope you’ll leave with a better understanding of your materials and, most importantly, the confidence to keep experimenting in your own studio.

There will be successes, surprises and probably a few failures along the way — and all of them are part of the process.

Some pieces of pottery seem to find exactly where they are meant to be. 🤍

Gary made this piece just a couple of weeks ago, never knowing the special place it would eventually find in Maryellen’s home — a calming space created to bring a little stillness and beauty into everyday life.

It means so much to us when something we have made becomes part of someone’s home, their rituals and their moments of quiet.

We are incredibly grateful for the people and connections we are finding through Old Stables Pottery — people who see the care, time and hands behind what we create, and choose to treasure it.

Thank you, Maryellen, for supporting our work, for sharing these beautiful photographs with us, and for giving Gary’s pottery such a meaningful place in your home.

THE WORLD OF MONOPRINTING —
A SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT OLD STABLES

We’d love to invite our community to come and experience The Big Book Exhibition at Old Stables Pottery & Gallery, opening Saturday 5 September at 4pm.

This is a wonderful exhibition to bring the family to — and especially a great experience for children and teenagers. The work is vibrant, playful and full of imagination, offering a beautiful introduction to the world of printmaking and creative expression.

The exhibition celebrates the tcreative work with the amazing team and community in the Wheatbelt around Carnamah, led by artist Geronazzo.

And there’s more…

On the same day, Francesco will be sharing the process behind the project in a special Monoprinting Workshop from 1–3pm.

Monoprinting is an exciting, hands-on form of printmaking where every print is unique. It’s about experimenting with marks, textures, layers and colour — and seeing what happens when you give yourself permission to play.

There are only 8 places available, so if you or your teenager would like to have a go, we recommend booking early.

“It’s been so great being part of the community and the project! For the next 3 years we will develop creative activities around Balingup — I can’t wait to start.” 🧡
