for 75 years of Mt Buller Ski Patrol, in the earliest years rescue sleds were makeshift often out of skis or branches, but the possibility of using new Austrian rescue sleds (Ajka's) were first discussed in the August 1950 edition of Schuss. In the 1952 Season Commandant Derrick Stogdale brought back several new ski sledges and a canoe sledge from Europe, it's likely the canoe sledge was an early Akja which were produced commercially from 1948 by Tyromont.

'We do lot of training to gain experience before ever running a "loaded" akja with a patient and over time, you get quite use to "running sleds", though when you stop and think about it, it is quite unique' - Ed Mahon, Manager, Mt Buller Ski Patrol, 2025.

for 100 years of Alpine Resort village celebrating the . The end of Hotham’s isolation came for the first time in 1958 but regularly from 1967 when the Great Alpine Road was ploughed the whole way through. While the improved access was appreciated, the destruction of favourite ski runs was not, in a letter to the Age in 1959 Alpine Club member Malcolm McColl liked clearing the road between Loch Spur and Davenport to ‘the equivalent of building a road across the centre of the MCG’. However the clearing of the road meant the beginning of the Hotham Road Gap tradition with skiers like Peter Zirknitzer, Richard Biggins, David Spears and Bailey Johnson all creating iconic images.
