MDHS Presentation - All Welcome
Moruya and the Death Railway: Nathaniel Traynor, Saturday 9 May 2pm, Moruya Library
RSVP for seating: [email protected]

During the Second World War, 22,376 Australians became prisoners of war under the Japanese. Many, including several residents of Moruya, were forced to work on the infamous Thai–Burma Death Railway, enduring starvation, tropical disease, and brutal treatment by their guards. Others were crammed into the cargo holds of Japanese “Hell Ships” bound for labour across the empire, only to be sunk en route by Allied submarines.
This presentation will explore survival and loss on the Death Railway through the experiences of Moruya prisoners of war.

Nathaniel Traynor, a history student studying at the University of Wollongong, has led several battlefield tours to the Thai–Burma Death Railway, including ANZAC Day 2026.
