On display at BAMM until 5 September is ‘Gamil-array-Thuuraay Light’, a collaboration between Gamilaroi/Gomeroi artist-in-residence Mona Fernando with Gamilaroi/Gomeroi artist Debbie Wood, BAMM education and engagement lead Cate Gaston and more than 200 young people from the local region.

Through a series of workshops the creative team wove individual lampshades to make a resplendent, illuminated installation that fills the gallery with hope, beauty and connection to place. The exhibition celebrates the light that shines on our rivers and our land, reminding us that we live from, care for and survive because of Country.

The HOME program workshops have continued this week at BAMM. HOME connects schools to local Aboriginal art, artists, community, language and culture. In 2026, its eleventh year, the program is realised on Kamilaroi/Gomeroi country at BAMM. Here are a few images from our workshop with Moree Public School, with Aunty Bernadette Duncan and Aunty Glenda Nicholls.

HOME is developed and delivered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in collaboration with the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit, Wiradjuri community members at Wagga Wagga, and Aboriginal communities and regional galleries across NSW.

Another of the exhibitions currently at BAMM is ‘Generations in Pattern and Paint’, which speaks to the enduring connections between culture and family – what is passed down, what is remembered and what continues to grow through creative expression.

Elizabeth Munro, a proud Gomeroi woman, born in 1962 in Moree, was raised at Mehi Mission alongside her eleven siblings. That place, where connection to family, culture and community was formed, remains at the heart of her practice.

Beginning her art journey at Moree TAFE, what started as learning new skills became something much deeper. Through painting and the creation of handcrafted dolls, Munro tell stories grounded in culture, ceremony and lived experience.

Her painted patterns carry meaning, drawing on memory and identity. Each mark is thoughtful and intentional, connected to generations before her and generations to come. Her dolls, also marked with ceremonial patterns, represent living presence—they hold story, spirit and continuity in physical form.

Munro says, ‘Art has helped me navigate personal loss, and honour the people and places that have shaped my life. It allows me to carry my family with me, to remember and to keep those connections strong. Through this work, I share not only my story, but a broader story of resilience, strength and belonging.’

Currently on display in the upstairs gallery is ‘Pressed with Personality’, an exhibition celebrating printmaking in all its forms by a vibrant collective of women from Narrabri and Wee Waa. Curated by Elizabeth Von Gavel from TAFE Moree and working across a range of techniques and styles, the artists explore texture, storytelling and creative risk, transforming everyday materials into expressive, layered works. The prints reflect the landscapes and communities of the artists, while also capturing their personal experiences, shared histories and moments of quiet observation.

‘Pressed with Personality’ highlights the strength of collaboration, offering a rich and engaging insight into regional women’s voices in contemporary printmaking.

Artists: Carolyn Slattery, Bridget Gordon, Lynette Bruce, Lisa Almagro, Nicola Wohling, Mary McGrath, Annie McMahon, Adelaide Johnson, Rhonda Palmer and Lizzie Von Gavel.

We were delighted to host the first day of the HOME program at BAMM today. HOME connects schools to local Aboriginal art, artists, community, language and culture. In 2026, its eleventh year, the program is realised on Kamilaroi/Gomeroi country at BAMM. Great to see artist Aunty Glenda Nicholls and Aunty Bernadette Duncan teaching kids from local schools, Bullarah, Burren Junction and Tulloona.

One of the exhibitions currently showing at BAMM is ‘Women of the Changing Seasons’ by artist Ann Johnson, curated by Elizabeth Von Gavel. Through painting and fabric work, Johnson explores the deep connection between women and Country as they gather bush tucker and share knowledge and culture. Inspired by the rivers, land and traditional patterns of her home through the cycles of the seasons, each work tells a story of belonging, as well as movement and change. ‘Women of the Changing Seasons’ honours Country, family and the knowledge that is shared across generations, keeping culture strong and alive.

Artist opportunity: Expressions of Interest for BAMM Regional Art Fair OPEN until Friday 10 August 2026

The BAMM Regional Art Fair (BRAF) celebrates the exceptional talent of artists from across Australia. BRAF invites works across a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, screen, textiles and photography. It provides a platform to showcase the depth of creative practice that thrives in regional communities.

EOIs are invited from professional artists who live or practise in, or are connected to regional Australia. Artists can apply to have their work exhibited salon-style as part of BRAF, one work only per artist. All works exhibited at the Art Fair are for sale.

Wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new friends at the exhibition opening last night at BAMM.

The downstairs gallery was aglow, with an incredible installation of 40 handmade lampshades in ‘Gamil-array-Thuuraay Light’, created by lead artist Mona Fernando with collaborating artist Debbie Wood, and with over 200 local school children who learned to weave with BAMM’s Education and Engagement Officer Cate Gaston and Debbie.

Elizabeth Von Gavel of TAFE Moree has curated three exhibitions that are on display in the upstairs galleries:

‘Pressed with Personality’ by a vibrant collective of women from Narrabri and Wee Waa celebrates contemporary printmaking in all its forms, exploring texture, storytelling and creative risk, transforming everyday materials into expressive, layered works. Each print is an impression not only of ink, but of character, place and connection.

‘Generations in Pattern and Paint’ by Gomeroi artist Elizabeth Munro speaks to the enduring connections between culture and family – what is passed down, what is remembered and what continues to grow through creative expression. ‘Traces of the Hand’ by the Moree Arts Community Centre continues in the upstairs galleries.

Many of the works in the upstairs galleries are for sale.

Join us to celebrate the opening of our next exhibitions at BAMM on Thursday 23 July at 5:30pm for 6pm.

‘Gamil-array-Thuuraay Light’ is an illuminated installation of 40 handmade lampshades by Gomeroi artist-in-residence at BAMM Mona Fernando and collaborating artist Debbie Wood, as well as over 200 young people from local schools who, in a series of workshops led by BAMM Education Officer Cate Gaston and Debbie, wove decorations for the lights. Participating schools: Moree Christian School, Moree Public School and Moree Secondary College.

Gamil-array-Thuuraay Light is supported by Arts North West, Regional Arts NSW and NSW Health.
